Southwest Metro Boys Athlete of the Week: Austin Andrews
Class AAAA has been a mess this year. In a good way.
The first Southwest Metro Athlete of the Week is sophomore forward Austin Andrews of Eden Prairie. He and the Eagles have played a key role in turning the team rankings upside down this season; they are 4-0 with a blowout win over top-rated Minnehaha Academy this week.
Andrews has produced beautifully for the Eagles so far, averaging 19.0 points per game including 22 against Burnsville and 33 against North St. Paul.
“The season is going great. We are off to a 4-0 start. Our team chemistry is great and we are committed to playing hard every night,” Austin said.
Austin and his teammates are springy and energetic; they often will have up to four sophomores on the floor at once, including Drake Dobbs, Connor Christensen, John Henry and Andrews. These have been some big early-season wins for such a youthful squad.
“We are definitely a young team but all of us have had a experience playing high level basketball through AAU,” Austin added. “We also have some seniors that have varsity experience and just won a football state championship. We are all on the same page and our goal is to win a state championship in basketball together.”
Austin is focused on growing as a player and having a blast with his teammates. There are also a handful of Division I schools who have talked to his coaches.
“The schools that have contacted my AAU coach are Northern Iowa, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska-Omaha, and Denver. I took an unofficial visit to North Dakota State this fall and really enjoyed the coaching staff, facilities, and the school. Drake was at our practice this week and invited me down to a game this season. I also went to a Minnesota Gopher game last season as an unofficial guest.”
Help congratulate Austin Andrews on being the first recipient of the Southwest Metro Athlete of the Week Award, presented by RedLine Athletics!
