The annual Chance Harman Memorial Classic took place in Floyd County this past weekend, which is on one of my personal favorite events of the year. The two day classic takes place about 30 minutes from Blacksburg, and always features a mix of talented local teams from the western part of the state as well as some big time out of area programs, giving me a great chance to see and evaluate talent from numerous levels in one event.

The event is named after Chance Harman, Floyd County Head Coach Brian Harman's son who passed away from a rare form of cancer in the early 2000s. The event features raffles, silent auctions and more, and all profits go toward childhood cancer research.

Here's a look at part one of the standouts from VA teams in attendance.

Toms was very good for Heritage in an impressive win over a young but good Radford team, and he showed a lot of potential moving forward with the way he plays. At 6'3” he has great positional size and is a natural athlete who can get up and down and guard multiple positions. He rebounded well on both ends, he showed the ability to handle the ball as a secondary ball handler and he made positive impacts on the game without needing the ball.

[player_tooltip player_id='1494113' first='Camryn' last='Pacheco'] | 6'3” CG | Spotswood '25

The Mount St. Mary's commit has been one of the best players in the state over the past few years, and he showed he's ready to take this team on a deep run in Class 3 this year with a win over a very good GW team. The 6'3” combo put on an impressive scoring display, showing his ability to play on and off the ball and score it from all three levels with relative ease. He attacks mismatches whether it's taking smaller guards to the post or using his shiftiness on bigger and slower matchups, he can make tough shots in the midrange and from deep and he gets to the line often for easy points.

[player_tooltip player_id='2242424' first='Tyler' last='Sprague'] | 6'0” PG | Spotswood '25

Sprague is one of the more underrated available guards in the class, and he was absolutely fantastic for the Trailblazers in their win setting the tone on both ends of the floor for his team. He's a scrappy and tough minded guard who oozes toughness on both ends of the floor, and he's a natural leader who holds his teammates accountable when they aren't playing hard. He's super quick and shifty off the bounce with the ability to push the rock in transition and break down defenders in isolation, he can make shots from all over the court and he's a very good on ball defender who can hound ball handlers and force them into mistakes.

[player_tooltip player_id='2309973' first='Kobe' last='Morrison'] | 6'2” CG | GW Danville '26

Despite the close loss to Spotswood, Morrison was absolutely fantastic for GW, particularly in the second half as he kept them in the game by making a lot of tough shots and putting his team on his back when it mattered the most. The lefty guard showed the ability to work in isolation and create space to make shots at multiple levels, he was a crafty finisher around the rim and he made plays for others throughout the game as well. He was an All State selection at Tunstall last year, and he's a big reason I expect GW to get back on the map they way they used to be in the next couple of years.

[player_tooltip player_id='2916369' first='Isaac' last='Smith'] | 6'7” WF | GW Danville '28

Smith was a player I heard about when he picked up an offer from ODU right before the new year, and the freshman is one of the most impressive long term prospects I've seen so far in this 2028 class. At 6'7” with long arms and likely still growing, I expected Smith would be a big man as he was their tallest player, and while he was forced to do a lot of the traditional things big men do his skillset and athleticism says he's likely going to get recruited and play on the perimeter at the higher level. He's a fluid athlete who runs the floor and has good pop as an athlete, he has good mechanics and can make shots from deep on the move, he can guard multiple positions and he's chock full of potential moving forward.

[player_tooltip player_id='2780031' first='Ethan' last='Jones'] | 6'6” WF | Cave Spring '26

While the Knights dropped a tough one to a very good Carroll team in the event, they have a bright future over the next few years, and Jones showed he's a prospect that should be on coaches radar right now. The 6'6” wing possesses a lot of skills that translate well to the next level, as he has great positional size and has mismatch qualities that make him very valuable when he's on the floor. He's got great length for his position and is a good athlete who thrives in transition, he can knock down shots from deep and work off the bounce to get spots and to the rim and he's a versatile defender who can guard multiple positions.

[player_tooltip player_id='2815299' first='Ashton' last='Cornett'] | 6'4” WG | Cave Spring '27

Cornette was another young prospect who impressed me for the Knights, and will definitely be introduced to the 2027 rankings in our next update. While he's just a sophomore, he showed a lot of maturity in his game, and his advanced skillset coupled with his impressive positional size already makes him very intriguing moving forward. The 6'4” guard showed he can play on or off the ball and get open to create shots, he made shots at a good clip from deep, he moves his feet well defensively and he's got a lot of upside moving forward.
