Prospect Spotlight: Justin Aspengren (2019)
Recently, Boone junior Justin Aspengren had a conversation with his coach, as a result, he’s been moved into a point-forward role with the Toreadors.
And at 6-foot-5, that’s a versatile role that should see result in a dramatic productivity increase.
Aspengren struggled in Boone’s first game of the season, scoring just two points on 1-6 shooting. He was much better in the second game after making the switch, and should continue to improve as the season wears on.
“After the Newton game, my coach pulled me in and he just told me that I need to pick up my role and be more of a player,” said Aspengren. “And I think that’s why I was moved to point guard, so I could make some plays and have the ball in my hands more often, and get our scorers the ball.”
At 6-foot-5 and able to play several positions, it’s Aspengren’s versatility that defines him as a player.
“After our first game, they moved me to the point, so I think I might play all five spots this year. I think I’ve been able to see the court very well, and I also like to catch the ball in post and face-up and hit a turnaround jumper,” said Aspengren.
“I need to continue and work on my ball-handling, and I’d like to shoot it better from behind the arc. I struggled shooting the 3 last year, so need to get better at that.”
With still his junior and senior seasons ahead of him, and a very important 17U season with Iowa Cornsharks, Aspengren says he’s not thinking about his recruitment just yet, but will start to get a feel for it after this season.
“I’ve gotten some mail and been invited to some camps, but I haven’t taken it too serious, I’m just kind of focused on school right now,” said Aspengren.
“I’m going to kind of feel it (recruitment) out after this year. I know this year is a big year for all that.”
