Week 2 Rankings Update
After an eventful opening week of the high school basketball season, there has been some shakeup in the rankings across all four classes.
In Class 1A, all ten preseason ranked teams remained in the rankings, with little shakeup as most teams blew out the competition during opening week. Defending champion Grand View Christian (4-0) has beefed up their schedule and didn’t bat an eye, going 4-0 against quality teams like Earlham, Nevada, Ankeny Christian and Central Decatur. North Linn (2-0) remained in the No. 2 spot after winning a pair of games by 134 points. Council Bluffs, St. Albert (1-0), LeMars, Gehlen Catholic (3-0) and Remsen, St. Mary’s (2-0) round out the top five. You can look at the full rankings here.
In Class 2A, the top three remain the same: No. 1 Van Meter (1-0), No. 2 Cascade (2-0) and No. 3 Sioux Center (2-0). Siouxland Conference rivals West Lyon and Sheldon flip spots to round out the top five, as Sheldon’s one-point loss to Sioux Center isn’t enough for them to fall too far. Rock Valley falls out of the rankings, while Carroll Kuemper Catholic joins at No. 10 after an impressive 2-0 week led by senior guard Parker Badding, who scored 44 in a win over Carroll.
The most shakeup came in Class 3A, where three teams fell out of the rankings. Top ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier beat then-No. 2 Mount Pleasant to open the year, then dominated then-No. 9 Waverly-Shell Rock to stay atop the rankings. Mount Pleasant fell to No. 3, while previous No. 3 Glenwood moved up a spot. Norwalk (No. 6) and Spirit Lake (No. 8) made the biggest movements, with each jumping up two spots, while Dubuque Wahlert, Winterset and Sergeant Bluff-Luton joined the rankings this week.
Top ranked and defending Class 4A champion Iowa City West picked up a big-time win on Saturday against six-time defending AAA champion DeLaSalle (MN) and stays atop the 4A rankings, where there isn’t much movement. The ranked teams went 12-1 during opening week, with the only loss being then-No. 5 West Des Moines Valley’s overtime defeat against then-No. 10 Des Moines Hoover. As a result, Waukee (No. 5) and Pleasant Valley (No. 6) each moved up a spot, while Hoover moved from No. 10 to No. 7.
