Recruiting Report: Ajai Washington (2018)
For Bowsher to have a chance to repeat as Toledo City League Champions, they’ll need 6’2”-6’3” point guard Ajai Washington (2018) to make a transition from role player to team leader.
“I got to be a leader … We lost all of our players. But as far as the role players, I feel like they fit in well with the new offense we got. I feel like we can win city’s again. But my expectation is to be better than last year,” Washington said.
The entire starting five from last season’s roster now plays on a college roster, including two at Edison State, who is interested in Washington.
“My former teammates from Edison, they’re coach got in contact with me. I talked to one JUCO. And, coach told me that the Cleveland State, it’s a community college, he told me that they were interested,” Washington said.
As far as what he wants to find in a program, Washington told us he’s “looking for any opportunity, the best opportunity.”
Washington would bring size at the point guard spot to a college program. The height allows him to see the court and play multiple roles on the perimeter.
“My best skills are being a floor general and attacking the rim … I can play all the way up to the 3 [position],” Washington said.
Washington is confident in his ability to beat guys off the dribble and get into the lane, but adding a more consistent jumper is key in his eyes.
“My 3-point shot is not that bad. I just want to have my 3-point shot as good as my attacking and my passing,” Washington said.
The parts of the game that he already has figured out will elevate his teammates in 2017-18. Bowsher may not have another guy who can create shots for others, so Washington will have the ball a lot this season. They’ll open up the season on Nov. 30 at Perrysburg High School.
Washington is signed up for the ACT in December for his first attempt. He currently carries a 2.2 GPA.
