Smith talked his fair share of smack on Saturday, but not shockingly he backed all of it up. When you don’t take any possessions off and are constantly applying pressure on both ends, it’s difficult to get the upper hand on him for an entire game. The 6-foot guard is probably the best undersized offensive rebounder in New England and is a total menace when it comes to getting loose balls. When he gets the opportunity to create offensively, he shows off some pretty impressive speed and quickness and some awesome finishing ability at the hoop. He’s getting D2 looks but could probably even play at the D1 level because of everything he brings on both ends.

Smith, who checks in at #140 overall and #23 among the lead guards, had a strong summer on the travel circuit with his ability to impact games offensively. He gets downhill off the bounce, has both short space quickness and good athletic burst, and does a nice job of spraying it out to shooters off drives. He’s a good athlete that can score it at the rim, while also showing the ability to knock down shots from behind the arc in catch and shoot situations. The high academic prospect will be a priority at the Division III level and could attract scholarship level attention with a strong season.

I cannot get enough of Smith’s game. He competes harder and does more little things than virtually any other player in New England. The 6-foot combo-guard gets more loose balls than any guard I’ve seen and is a total pest on the defensive end and offensive glass. He’s the type of guy you love to play with and dread playing against. Offensively, he can shoot it from three and also does a really good job finishing with contact at the hoop — he has a knack for using his body and is a way better athlete than you think. Call me crazy, but Smith can play scholarship basketball — just watch him for more than 10 minutes and you’ll see it too.

Smith was an impact player for Tabor Academy last season but will have a lot more on-ball responsibility without former star player Daithi Quinn in the fold. He showed this weekend that he can handle it, making good decisions out of the pick and roll and hitting shots from all three levels. Most impressive, though, was his defense. He’s an amazing on-ball defender but also has great instincts in the passing lanes and on the help side. Takes charges, too. Coach’s dream in terms of what you look for in a defensive guard.

Smith is only 6-feet tall, but it feels like he plays bigger than that. He holds his own on the defensive end and is so active with his hands that he gets a lot of steals and blocks (he somehow managed 3 blocks against St. George’s). Offensively, Smith can shoot it from three but also has a super compact handle and a variety of crafty finishes at the rim with great touch. Smith is a two sport athlete who can definitely play D3 hoops if he wants to – he’ll be able to fit into any system and play the right brand of basketball.
