NHR was at Augsburg Sunday night checking out the Heat Expo as several MIAC and NSIC schools sat along the baseline to observe talent. The players did their skill drills and then competed on three courts (until one of the rims was busted).
Player Notes
- The thing that most will remember from the Heat Expo is the cover shot, Anthony Zarr of Fridley trying to throw down during a break and making life harder for the event runners because he snapped a piece out of the rim attachment.
- I really liked what I saw from 2017 CJ Woda. Did solid things this summer but what caught my eye was three things: seems longer and taller than I recall, his crafty play making was quite eye-catching (the Chris Webber like behind the back fake into a one hand finger roll was memorable), looked like a scholarship type prospect. And yes Heritage Christian twitter site, we understand there are other good players on the team as well. That said, Woda was the guy who impressed at the Expo likely putting his name on college lists to watch for the next couple years.
- Lamar Wood is a 2017 6-foot-7 frontcourt player that transferred from Illinois to Patrick Henry and this guy is really going to help them. Very agile and quick off his feet at his size, incredible length, and a load of potential. You would expect him to be an impact player this winter for sure.
- Sitting with some scouts and coaches, we threw out a challenge: who would be the first guy to talk on defense and rotate into help position during the games. The answer for both was Quinton Siebenahler. The Luverne big did a great job of taking the games seriously as well as rebounding quickly and physically.
- Three man Markest Brown transferred from Richfield to Patrick Henry and I think he can help the Patriots. Saw him score four active buckets in two minutes time including a spin move into a short squared up jumper.
- Krisean Coffee of Mankato East was one of the few guys that simply stepped forward and dominated. Loved how hard he worked taking shorter guys to the front of the rim for attacking scores and taking it upon himself to battle some of the better players on both ends and usually coming out on top. Physical, motivated player who will battle.
- Another Patrick Henry guy who consistently played well was Savion Scott. Took charge of the ball commanding the game as the PG, did a lot of scoring but mixed it in with trying to move the ball and getting others on his team involved as well. Liked what he did with and without the ball.
- Tessy Pal had several blocks in the paint erasing players from getting a chance to get a sneaky lay-up or attacking bucket. Pal also impressed with his comfort taking care of the basketball away from the basket. This is a guy that will face up and successfully attack bigs and you can use him in so many ways off ball screens.
- DeNario Jackson played at another speed than most often racing past slow transitioning defenders to get to the front of the rim for playmaking. This is a pace pusher in all ways. Nice Tartan guard.
- Is Cole Tesch-Stevson going to be one of the guys cracking that rotation for DeLaSalle? He's a senior this year with some length and I thought he played well at this event.
- Another playmaker who caught attention was Irondale junior Sean Sutherlin. Scored a lot for his team last year and this year he could help take Irondale over .500.
