Prospect Spotlight: Trey Shearer (2021)
The 2021 Watch List will be published later this month on our site, and Montezuma 5-foot-10 point guard Trey Shearer will certainly be on it.
The freshman standout was first identified as a top prospect by us at our Top 250 Expo last fall, and the Iowa Barnstormers have now taken notice, Shearer will play 15U ball with them next offseason.
We recently caught up with the talented floor general, and he explained to PHIA what makes him such a threat on the floor. It’s a selfless style of play.
“I think what I do best is finding other people shots. My play style is more get to where I go, find someone else, get them going and get them hot. And then I like to play defense, it’s an important part of basketball, and I like to be a complete player,” said Shearer.
“Some stuff I need to work on the most is a lot of off-hand stuff, left-hand finishing, dribbling, stuff like that. My goal is to keep my off-hand fresh, and just as strong as my strong hand.”
Shearer spent his 14U season with Iowa Intensity, and had nothing but great things to say about the program.
“I absolutely love the Intensity program, it’s a great family and I made lots of great friends, and they were a lot of fun. This past summer was great, I was older, bigger and playing against some top competition really helped me,” said Shearer, who now looks forward to his Iowa Barnstormers opportunity.
“Going into next summer with the Barnstormers, I’m really excited. We just went down to Chicago and did the Pangos Camp, and I had a lot of fun doing that. I’m just really excited for next summer, it will be a great opportunity for me to grow as a player.”
First though, he’ll head into his freshman season with the Braves, where he’ll look to make a big splash with the varsity by season’s end.
“My expectations are high, I really want to get to that varsity level,” said Shearer. “I’m going to push myself towards a starting varsity role, that’s a big goal of mine, as well as great team success.”
