Expert Analysis
Sam Duren | Prep Hoops Scout
Gillispie was instant offense off the bench in a recently streamed game against a 17U team. Has the making of a high level shot maker off the dribble. Utilizing ball screens or his handle and height advantage to pull up in the midrange and from deep. Brought a similar attacking mindset on defense. Including a steal and score that he created by being a physical off the ball defender. The raw tools are there for Gillispie to make one of the bigger leaps in the 2028 class in Oklahoma. And the signs are there he’s very capable of looking like a different type of player by this winter.

PCN has a deep cast of rotating guards, which means it’s often a different player stepping up every night. The talented Gillispie is in stay ready mode as a key part of their depth. Checked in mid fourth and served up a sweet lob that served as an exclamation point. Had a couple turnovers in the closing moments too, but it didn’t cost PCN the game. And should serve as valuable learning experience for a guard with the potential to be a game changer come March.

The PCN Panther had it going in the mid-range on Saturday. Has a variety of dribble moves he can chain together to get the split second needed to rise up and hit tough shots. Even hit jumpers over some of the better defenders at the camp. Really starting to come into his athleticism, looking faster on drives while maintaining his smooth play that makes him such a scoring threat. A spring and summer of national competition looks to have treated him well ahead of a potential breakout sophomore campaign for 6A contenders PCN.

The second part of PCN’s promising backcourt foundation for their new era. Strong all around guard with few holes in his game. Enters high school already with good size and good athleticism, with the room to grow into a power guard in Oklahoma.

Devion Gillispie stood out as one of the best freshmen guards in the state throughout the summer while playing for Team Trae Young and also at Prep Hoops’ Freshmen Showcase. He is a very explosive guard who is at his best with the ball in his hands. Being an efficient scorer from all three levels while also having great vision and feel for the game make him an extremely interesting name to monitor as he begins his high school career. Attending Putnam City North in the upcoming season, Gillispie seems poised to add a spark to a bounce back season for the Panthers. He brings all of the physical tools that coaches hope to see in a guard and an extremely high level skillset which looks more well-rounded than you typically see from freshmen.

Smooth guard with an all around game that should help him hit the ground running at guard heavy Putnam City North. Burst and athleticism is starting to come in, to add to his threat as a driver and should produce highlights around the rim. The ability to knock down catch and shoot shots will be crucial for him early in his high school career. The Panthers are DEEP with guards, and Gillispie adds to that as a potential building block for their first year head coach.

Devion Gillispie had a terrific day and excelled in nearly every aspect of the game. He’s lightning-quick and is a good vertical athlete which led to a number of transition opportunities. He knocked down catch-and-shoot threes with ease but was equally as lethal from all three levels. Gillispie has great vision and regularly threw passes that seemed to keep getting more impressive. The aspect of his game that jumped out today was his leadership. Even though he had never played with these players before, he communicated very well.

Devion Gillispie is a well-rounded guard who plays with high energy at all times. He makes a large impact both on offense and defense by being a non-stop mover. When he has the ball in his hands, he handles pressure well and creates clean looks for himself as well as his teammates. His shooting form is pure and quick which allows him to take and make tough shots from all over the court. As one of the better freshman guards in Oklahoma, Gillispie should make noise for himself sooner rather than later.

Devion Gillispie had a high-impact summer as one of the best guards that I had the chance to cover. He is a do-it-all lead guard and one of the more impressive floor generals in the 2028 class within Oklahoma. Staying aggressive for the full length of the court on both offense and defense, Gillispie keeps his opponents on their toes. His ability to keep defenders at a distance while bringing the ball was consistent throughout the summer was extremely impressive. Regardless of the intensity of the defender, Devion never got rushed and was able to play at his own pace throughout the summer.

Devion Gillispie was one of the best all-around prospects at this event, but I was the most impressed with his ability to get to the rim. He’s an extremely quick guard with great touch near the rim. Defenses started to pick up on him wanting to get to the rim, so when those lanes were closed off, Devion finished with floaters and touch shots in the paint. Not many defenders were able to stay in front of him through the weekend and he took advantage by driving aggressively both in transition as well as off the dribble from the perimeter. Devion is a very promising prospect who already knows how to play his game and creative enough to make adjustments on the fly.
