So we are going to focus on Season Superlatives in a variety of categories: leaders, stat sheet stuffers, defenders, athletes
Here’s a celebration of some of the state’s top Stat Sheet Stuffers:
Hardly anyone at the big school level stuffed stat sheets like English. He was one of the most prolific scorers of the era, averaging about 30 points a game over the past three seasons (33 per game as a senior). For a big-time scorer, English racked up assists at an equally high right. He was one of the leading assist men in the state with 8 per game this year. He was a productive rebounder and defender too.
Reece was just about as prolific on the small school level as English was in 5A. After averaging 19 points and 10 boards as a junior, Reece took his scoring to the next level as a senior, getting 28 points per game. He did it in a variety of ways, hitting for 35% from deep, dominating around the goal, and running the floor. He dished out 2.5 assists to go with 9 boards and nearly 2 blocks and 2 steals.
A guy you might not know but who deserves to get credit is the long, athletic big man at Anderson County. Porter runs the floor with or without the ball, making plays in transition and generally disrupting the game. To go with 17 points and 9 boards, he contributed 3 steals, 2 assists and 2 blocks. He poured in 29 points against eventual state champ Wellsville.
Morgan puts together an interesting stat line – a big man how collects steals and assists at a very high rate. His athleticism and playmaking ability creates opportunities not just for him but for his teammates. On a team that shared the ball effectively, Morgan dealt out 6 assists to go with 13 points and 5 rebounds.
One of the most versatile guards in the big school level, Johnson is a highly effective point man who is just as good off the ball. A dynamite shooter and a big rebounder from the guard spot, Johnson fills the stat box in every way. His long arms and athleticism produce steals and blocks, he can get to the goal on the bounce, and his length and vision lead to a lot of assists.
