Recruiting Report: Kaalas Roots (2020)
Bossier 6-foot guard Kaalas Roots was of of the more impressive 2020s at Louisiana’s Top 250 Expo in September, and should be on the radar of college coaches as he heads into his junior season.
Some Division I and Division II schools are already showing some initial interest in the talented combo-guard.
“My coach told me that a couple teams asked about me. He told me Houston, Northwestern State, Grambling and a couple D2 schools have asked about me,” said Roots.
“For me, it doesn’t really matter where I go. As long as I can get my education and play ball, then I’m going to be ready no matter what.”
A menace on the defensive side of the ball, Roots sites his stout D as his main strength on the court. But his offensive arsenal is coming along nicely, too.
“My main strength is on defense, I take pride in it. I practice a lot on my offensive game; shooting, getting to the basket, making sure everybody has an open shot. And I like to make sure my teammates get open shots,” said Roots.
“In high school, I play off-guard, but when I get to the next level, I feel like I’ll play more point guard. So, I’ll have to work on everything that it takes.”
He added: “And heading into my upperclassmen years, I really want to be a stronger and smarter guard and hit my open shots. There’s always things I can work on.”
He worked on his game plenty this spring and summer while running with Louisiana Select Team Millsap 16U
“I had a lot of fun out there, just being with all my teammates from across Louisiana. And I feel like I did lot and had a nice season,” said Roots. “I just went out there and played as hard as I could, and tried to help my team.”
With his junior year just a month-and-a-half away, he’s ready to showcase his skills as an upperclassman, with a more prominent role than last season.
“Last year, we had a lot of seniors, and that that allowed to me to surprise some people when I went out and got some open shots and just do things a lot easier,” said Roots.
“This year, I’ll be one of the bigger players to worry about, me and Jacoby Decker. We’re going to be harder to deal with, and the team is on our shoulders this year.”
