KJ Johnson Recruiting Update (2019)
Basketball trends come and go. Just a couple years ago short point guards were all the rage (Tyler Ulis, Isaiah Thomas, Nate Robinson), but K.J. Johnson is trying to take it back for the taller point men. Even if four inches of K.J.’s height is hair.
From his 6-foot-1 perch, underneath trademark high hair, long-armed junior K.J. loves to pass and involve teammates.
He makes a statement every time he steps onto the floor with first his hair and then with his dissecting game.
“Most people just call it ‘The Fro.’
Though he projects as a college combo he competes with point guard Caleb Fields for reigning District 12AA Champions Marshall County High School.
Despite the interest his game cultivated in the recent AAU season, KJ is more focused on development than recruitment.
“As of right now there are no (schools) in particular,” said KJ Johnson. “There are so many schools that watch during live period and other times. My main thing is to keep working and catch the eye of as many coaches as I can.”
Recruiting
Belmont notified K.J. Johnson of their interest and let him know they are tracking his progress.
“I talked to (Assistant) Coach Ayers and I’ve gotten multiple letters from each of the coaches,” said Johnson. “Coach (Brian) Ayers said that he would be in to watch me workout before the month is over. The letters were statistics about the program overall and basically showing how I could fit in with the program.
Marshall County’s season needs to advance Johnson and Fields pretty deep to secure some college evaluations. Frankly, the school is pretty remote to draw an in-season trip from college coaches. Hopefully the OVC teams already on Johnson will ramp up and mimickers will follow.
