-Lonergan was named BCL Honorable Mention after turning in a production active 10-game stretch of game to provide play-making, defense, and shot-making while the Cavaliers dealt with some injuries in their backcourt. Lonergan showed a willingness to take charges, serve as a good primary or helper in the Cavs’ run n jump schemes, and guard multiple positions as the defensive heartbeat for this group. His ability to force his matchup sideline or funnel them towards help depending on different defensive lineups was crucial in several big games. He also served as a cerebral off-ball guard adept at jumping passing lanes to create extra opportunities for his team in transition, infusing life into his team’s offense during stagnant stretches of play.

Spalding’s roster gives Mount Carmel’s a run from a pure talent perspective. The Cavaliers scheduled accordingly and had a tough road in non-conference play with injuries to key rotation players to add insult. Throughout, Lonergan has consistently been the backcourt producer as he spaces the floor taking on the role of a fearless shot-maker while muddying things up for others defensively. There have been a handful or more of games this season where Lonergan has led the scoring attack and as head coach Josh Pratt works to regain some cohesion within the rotation as guys missed valuable stretches, Lonergan’s consistency could be a foundational piece that comes into play during playoff time. Spalding is 12-11 overall.

Mo G 13p 4a 4r 2s vs Calvert Hall

-Lonergan performed well in a spot start as the Cavaliers deal with some injuries in their backcourt. We got to see the full range of his skillset but he had a great 1H especially to get Spalding out to an early lead. Lonergan scored off an AND1 layup after getting the step on his matchup, had a beautiful dime off the bounce to a cutter, drove it straight down the middle before he hit the AND1 layup with the left off the window, scored on a runout later in the quarter, then stole away his matchup’s defensive rebound in the 3Q and forced up a shot to draw a hard foul that sidelined him for the rest of the night. A kicker on the gridiron this past fall and a captain on the soccer team, the leadership traits translate between each sport as he’s a steady, confident play-maker in each setting.

-The son of a former long-time college coach— Lonergan is not a physically-dominant athlete but really understands defensive positioning and how to shade his defender to help. Love the way that he forces dribble pick-ups both on or off the ball by timing his stunts well. Lonergan provides good contests without fouling but also has active hands to poke out steals or block a shot before it gets above his matchup’s hips. He understands rotations and regularly puts his body on the line to draw charges that shift the momentum of games and sideline an opponent’s best player. The moxie and competitiveness that he plays with are only bonuses to the value that he brings at the defensive end of the floor.

Previous Rank: 90

-There’s nothing flashy about Lonergan’s game but he is effective, serving as a great shooter and connector from the perimeter for a Cavaliers team that has been very good this summer. Lonergan does a great job of scanning the floor before he catches the ball and always seems to know where the help defense is at its weakest. Like that he is staying home defensively, not risking it all for steals and keeping his man in front to force TOs and bad shots over the top. He has improved his handle and is excellent at drawing fouls around the rim whether he is driving it in transition or in the halfcourt.

15p 1a 1r 2s vs Georgetown Prep

-Really balanced performance from Lonergan in this one as he showed off his basketball feel/IQ at both ends of the floor. Lonergan’s box score stats often don’t reflect his impact as an unselfish player that serves as a great connector that makes the hockey assist, a leader that directs traffic at both ends and helps smooth over communication gaps between coaches and players, or the shots that he passes up to find something better for a teammate or run a set. He hit open 3s, finished through contact at the rim after attacking a closeout, rotated well defensively to wall up and force bigs into taking bad shots over him, and poked out two steals. Definite candidate to move up in our next rankings update because of how he impacts winning on a consistent basis.

14p 3r 4a vs SFA (3/5 3PT)

-While I wouldn’t call him a full time PG, Lonergan serves as a great connector for the Cavaliers. He keeps his head up to deliver dimes to backdoor cutters or make skip passes after getting two feet in the paint, can defend guards and most wings, and will sneak in to grab some big rebounds in key moments of games. The shooting was huge in this one, with Lonergan knocking down 3 triples to help the Cavaliers score a big win at home to take sole place of 1st in the BCL from SFA.

10p 4a 2s 2r vs Mt. Zion

-Lonergan showed his value as a versatile guard prospect that can shoot, take guys off the bounce, rebound, and make the extra pass. The son of a former college coach, his feel shows at both ends of the floor in his defensive rotations and the way that he manipulates defenders with his eyes to pass to a different teammate. A name to track moving forward for LM-MM college coaches.
