Some are established vets trying to keep their skills sharp while others are unproven young guys trying to establish roles on the varsity. And some are sophomores who are still unknown.
It’s easy to put all the focus on the new names. But we don’t want to overlook the established varsity studs who used the day to keep sharp for the season that’s just a month or so away.
Here are five of the state’s top players who put their skills on display at the Kansas Top 250 Expo (in alphabetical order):
One of the very best guards in the state led the attack for a team that absolutely flattened the field Saturday. They ran up and down the floor wearing opponents out with their fast break attack, with Cobin leading the way. His team was so talented and in synch, Cobin didn’t have do it all himself. But he flashed the talents that make him so dynamic. He is strong and lightning quick on the drive and he hits circus shots with regularity. He didn’t try to make it all about him. He blended with the teammates who were put together for the one-day event – not something everyone can do easily.
There were a lot of athletic forwards in the gym Saturday. But Freeman stood out. Perhaps the thing you notice first is just how easily he throws down with two hands. He’s the kind of athlete who just makes the game look simple. Freeman handled the ball and attacked from the point, ran the floor smoothly and made plays in the paint. He’s well-built and plays with physicality. Freeman was really good as a sophomore, and there’s a ton more out there for him.

The Expo attracts a lot of guards who are eager to show they can attack and make plays in transition. “PJ” Moore reminded everyone that he’s already an established varsity warrior. Though just a junior, he looked strong and mature against the field Saturday. He took the ball into the teeth of the defense and scored or kicked it to shooters effectively. He ran the break and provided leadership to a team loaded with full court threats.
Myovela stood out as one of strongest, most physical players at the expo. It’s surprising that he’s just a sophomore when you stack him up against the competition. No wonder he’s having a fine season as a versatile threat for the Maize football team. He combines size, strength and explosiveness, great coordination and athletic skill. His team was shorthanded and struggled Saturday, but Myovela left no question about his talents.

The Expo was a great opportunity to see the 2A rising star Smith against competition from bigger schools. He’s got good size for a guard and is capable of taking opponents into the lane and muscling up. He’s a smooth, skilled player who is a threat to go end to end with the ball and make plays at high speed. He is a good athlete who makes things look easy. As a point guard, his eyes are always up, getting his teammates the ball in good position. Smith showed he can play with anyone, from any level.
