Around The State (Haywood County)
Haywood County only has two high school basketball teams, Tuscola High School and Pisgah High School. Both of these schools together form one of the biggest rivals in state regardless of sport.
The Tuscola-Pisgah high school football game annually sees crowds of upwards of 10,000 fans. Basketball games are standing room only. The towns of Canton and Waynesville are blue-collar working mill towns and the people of this community come out to support these athletes any night there is a game.
Max RogersHere is a look at some of the top basketball prospects in the county.
Tuscola High School returns one of the top post players in the area with 6-foot-6 Landon Henley, a big with great footwork and post moves. Has nice touch and feel around basket. One of WNC’s top big men who was named all-conference and all-district last season.
Tuscola (Anthony Westhusing) and Pisgah (Trey Morgan) both lost senior guards from last season’s team and will rely on underclassmen to fill that void for this upcoming season.
2020 guard Max Rogers of Tuscola High School is a 6-foot shooter. His form on his shot is text-book and is one of the best that I have seen at this age for a player. He is athletic and can finish plays at the rim. He spent his freshman season playing on a team that made the 1st round of the NCHSAA playoffs. He will be a key player this upcoming season for the Mountaineers.
Pisgah High School returns Zeke Long, a rising junior point guard who is shifty with the ball in his hands. He can score off the dribble and get by defenders. He has a good shot to go along with being the floor-general who can find the open man and attract defense. Head Coach Casey Kruk gets the most out of his players and will have them ready come November.
