Prospect Spotlight: Will Berg (2020)
Checking in at No.5 in our inaugural 2020 prospect rankings, Valley 6-foot-8 forward Will Berg has already been making a name for himself across Iowa high school hoops circles.
Already with great size and a versatile skill-set, it’s no wonder why there’s so much buzz surrounding him now.
“I consider my strengths to be ball-handling for a big, and shooting from the perimeter. And then just facing up on the elbow and getting by my defender. And also passing and making my teammates better,” said Berg. “And I’m way more comfortable out on the perimeter. I’m more of a small forward.”
A rising sophomore with the Tigers, Berg recently finished up his grassroots season with Beyond Ball, and finished July by playing up a level with the 16U team.
“At the end of July, I played with the 16U team and I had more of a role of passing and getting my teammates involved,” said Berg. “And whenever they needed me to, I would score.”
Now, Berg will head into the latter half of his offseason, and says he’ll spend it with the Valley varsity in fall league, as somewhat of a tryout.
“This year for the fall CIML league, I’m playing with the varsity, and I’ll know what I’ll play (this season) after that, either sophomore or varsity,” said Berg.
“I really hope to get playing time with the varsity. I know I won’t start, but the only other person I’ve known who’s played varsity as a sophomore is Quinton (Curry), so that would be pretty big.”
No matter if he comes off the bench with the varsity, or stars with what’s sure to be one of the best sophomore squads in the state, Berg says his role will primarily be in the paint.
“My goals this fall are to improve on my post-moves, because that’s what I feel my role will be for Valley,” said Berg. “So my goal is to become a better post-player.”
