17U All State Team
July marked the end of the 17U season in Minnesota but August brings us the 17U All State Team headlined by some of the best players in America.
NHR 17U All State First Team
Tre Jones of Howard Pulley (Apple Valley). The EYBL Offensive Player of the Year put up 20.4 points, 7.3 assists, and 5.3 rebounds a game. A first team 17u All American and EYBL First Team Honored player.
Matthew Hurt of D1 Minnesota (Rochester JM). Came back from injury to put up nearly 20 points per game with eight boards and a pair of blocks per game. A Fourth Team 17U All American despite being a 2019 playing with 2018s.
Jalen Suggs of Grassroots Sizzle (Minnehaha Academy). The UAA Newcomer of the Year who averaged 18 points per game with 6.4 rebounds and nearly three assists a contest. Most productive 2020 nationally playing at the 17u level.
Daniel Oturu of Howard Pulley (Cretin-Derham Hall). One of the few EYBL players to average a double-double, Oturu put up 11.8 points, 10.1 rebounds and nearly two blocks a contest. A Minnesota committed prospect.
Gabe Kalschuer of Howard Pulley (DeLaSalle). Made more threes in the EYBL regular season than any other player and did it at a rate of 43 percent in the first four sessions (averaged 17.7 points a game in the EYBL spring). Committed to Minnesota.
Calvin Wishart of D1 Minnesota (Delano). The only Minnesota senior-to-be that played as well as Wishart this July was Jones. Wishart went head to head with high major talent and often outplayed them pushing D1 to a 15-4 July record in three events. Averaged 14 a game in July.
Cook
NHR 17U All State Second Team
Jarius Cook of Powerhouse Minnesota (Park Center). Cook was the top Powerhouse player this year scoring consistently with the touch and on the move scoring 13 a game.
Luke Martens of Select Ohnstad (Apple Valley). Luke’s performance in Las Vegas will go down in the history books as one of the most memorable Sin City stretches ever.
Joseph Hedstrom of Comets Elite Lewis (Hopkins). Hedstrom got chances to touch deep in the post all spring and summer and earned D1 offers with his strong numbers putting up 12/8.
Michael Jones of Fury Wilde (Woodbury). Hit at the arc at all times but also found other ways to score moving off the ball, using the dribble, and some posting up. Scored 16 a game.
Jarvis Thomas of Howard Pulley (Orono). Was a constant highlight film all summer long plus gave the Panthers six boards and 3-4 scores a contest.
Brevyn Spann-Ford of Comets Elite Lewis (St. Cloud Tech). There were July moments where Brevynn not only took games over but looked like a major conference hooper (Big Ten football player).
NHR 17U All State Third Team
David Roddy of Howard Pulley (Breck). Roddy was four baskets away from an EYBL double figure average. Very impressive as a 2019
Both Gach of Powerhouse MN (Austin). Played on three different teams so it was tough to get a rhythm but was still one of the best playmakers regardless of what jersey he wore.
Matt Todd of Comets Elite Lewis (Monticello). One of the top guards in the NY2LA League this year ranking with the top playmakers.
Race Thompson of D1 Minnesota (Robbinsdale Armstrong). Led D1 in scoring and rebounding when Hurt was out because of injury. Inconsistent time on the floor in the summer. Headed to Indiana.
Anthony Davis of Powerhouse MN (Hopkins). Every time that Powerhouse box scores were talked about it was Davis as a leader or one of the leaders. Every time.
Deundra Roberson of 43 Hoops (Columbia Heights). Every time a Prep Hoops writer from out of the state saw 43 they wanted to talk about Deundra.
Shae Mitchell of D1 Minnesota (Lakeville South). It’s amazing what confidence can do. Shae shot the ball so well for D1 Minnesota and gave his team a third scoring option all summer.
NHR 17U All State Fourth Team
Josiah Strong of Powerhouse MN (Champlin Park). Moved from “shooter” to more of a “playmaker” while grabbing three D1 offers.
Beijan Newbern of Select Ohnstad (Robbinsdale Cooper). Had a brilliant spring leading Select to the NHR state title and a top five spot (top three at one point).
Max Bjorklund of Fury Antl (Orono). Playing both guard spots Max was one of the most consistent scorers helping Fury to have three of the biggest 17u upsets.
Eric Tiedman of Fury Wilde (Jordan). The Augustana commit was one the hardest working players on the circuit and consistent finisher.
Michael Schaefer of Powerhouse MN (St. Cloud Cathedral). Michael shoots like a three, can be a stretch four too, but had to play a five for his team and did it without a concern helping his team win.
Tayler Johnson of Grassroots Sizzle (Mpls North). Gave Grassroots a second scoring option all year long scoring a dozen a night vs UAA play.
NHR 17U All State Fifth Team
Nathan Rund of Comets Elite Lewis (Fergus Falls). Mr. Consistency all year on both ends.
Nathan Macho of MN Eagles (Apple Valley). Top scorer for his team and an improved defender. Scored inside and out.
Kyle Boerhave of SW MN Stars (Sheldon, IA). Put up big numbers for the Stars proving to be a consistent 16/17 a game guy.
Lu’Cye Patterson of Mpls FAB (Brooklyn Center). FAB is a young team playing up for the most part but Patterson had them competing with everyone.
Jordan Belka of Comets Servaty (Rogers). Maybe the biggest D2 surprise stock raiser of the year, Belka was fantastic.
Damani Hayes of D1 Rise/Grassroots Sizzle (Mankato East). Was the top scorer for the D1 Rise overall and the top defender when playing with the Sizzle.
Bryce Phillips of WOTN (North St. Paul). Loved the way that he fought and help his own against top guards in state, loved how he led a battling team.
NHR 17U All State Sixth Team
Garett Maag of Select Ohnstad (St. Croix Lutheran). One of the most productive athletes.
Anders Nelson of D1 Minnesota (Edina). Big shot maker for D1 Minnesota all year.
Drew Galinson of Fury Wilde (Wayzata). Hit big shots and was the most consistent perimeter defender on a top defending team.
Nick Fulford of Select Ohnstad (Waconia). Hit big shots all summer and showed he can score inside and out.
Wendell Matthews of 43 Hoops (Columbia Heights). Too quick for most bigs no matter where the 43 schedule took his team.
JaVonni Bickham of Grassroots Sizzle (Minnehaha Academy). Had a great July attacking the middle and completing plays.
Cooper Jackson of WOTN (Lakeville South). WOTN was so balanced it was hard to pick individuals but Cooper’s effort was often the heart and soul.
