Recruiting Report: Kelvin Murphy (2018)
One of Louisiana’s rising players for the 2018 is 5’10 PG Kelvin Murphy of Port Allen. He is fresh coming off a great summer playing with LA United out of Baton Rouge.
“It was a great experience for me playing with LA united. I learned a lot more about the game playing along side other high basketball IQ athletes. Playing with them allowed me the opportunity to grow as a basketball player, I became a better student of the game. My basketball IQ overall grew from playing with those guys.” said Kelvin.
He became a much better player this summer playing off the ball, and as a result was a more efficient player. Even though he had a smaller role with LA United, and he wasn’t forced to do everything for them, and shined while doing so. “When I’m playing for Port Allen, I’m the point guard, I run the show and have to make my team better as a whole. I have to be the leader on offense and defense. I have more of a effect on the entire game when I play with Port Allen High.” Kelvin explains.
It was recently announced that Port Allen has hired a new coach, Derrick Jones, who has spent the last 12 years as a college assistant coach, and will bring expertise that will help all of Port Allen’s players.
As for Murphy, his goals are simple. “My prayer is that we have a better year than we experienced last year. I would like to enter the playoffs at a higher seed this year, because we have dropped down to Class-2A. I would like to be able to be a good leader for my team and hopefully be able to make a deep run in the playoffs.”
In order to reach those goals, Murphy has been working hard on bettering himself. “I’ve been working on shooting off the dribble, a lot. I know it could be really helpful to my game so I work on that a lot. Also, I’m trying to gain weight so that I can get stronger and become a better finisher around the rim. Getting stronger so that I can become a better finisher is my main priority, it’s the biggest thing I need to work on.”
Although he doesn’t have any offers yet, a good weekend for LA United landed him on the map of a school out of Baton Rouge. “Southern University is really the only school that has been talking to me. They said that they are going to begin recruiting me.”
Although going D1 is his hope, he isn’t limiting himself in anyway. “I’m just looking for a school that wants me to be successful on their basketball team and in life. I also want them to know that I can help their team in whatever ways they might need. I also would like to attend a school with a good academic program. I try to make sure I do my best when it comes to my academics. Yes, I am willing to travel far from home, I just want to play at the next level. That is ultimately the most important thing to me right now.”
Kelvin Murphy has a 4.0 GPA and a 19 on his ACT, although he will be taking it again this year to improve it.
