If you were to read off some of the names of the players in the Greater Miami Conference (GMC), it read like a who’s who of prep basketball talent in Cincinnati. The 2016-17 season for this conference saw multiple players from the class of 2017 going on to play at the next level including Jayden Sayles (Sycamore/Akron) and Evan Kuhlman (Lakota East/Evansville). And the class of 2018 is also stacked within the conference with players like Darius Bazley (58th nationally/Princeton) and a host of other talented players. But with all this talent the leading scorer in the conference was Jarett Cox of Lakota East at over 18ppg. With his scoring ability and athleticism, this is a player coaches at the next level will absolutely need to see.
Cox is a very athletic 6’2 guard that can excels in the open court and getting to and finishing at the rim. “Getting to the rim off the bounce has always been a part of my game,” Jarett stated. “It just has increased more and more as I have gotten more athletic.” While driving the ball is his best attribute, Jarett is also a very good catch and shoot player which shows by his shooting 41% from three last season. He also stated he has been working on his ball-handling, in particular driving to his left, which should help him become even more lethal off the dribble. Defensively his athleticism is also a factor as he very good at playing the passing lanes while also being a solid help defender under the basket. Jarett also is not scared of the defensive challenge when it comes to guarding the opponent’s best player.
“I have received two offers from Findlay and Fairmont State so far,” Jarrett stated. “I also have talked to St. Francis (PA), Tulsa, Western Michigan, Ashland, Malone University and Alabama-Huntsville along with some other schools that I cannot remember right now.” With a 2.9 GPA, Cox scored a 22 on ACT and hopes to major in Business and Marketing once he gets to the next level. As for his goals for his senior year, Cox was very upfront in what he wanted to achieve. “My goals are to break the season scoring average and points in a season record. I also want to make the 1,000 point club and I want to make it past the Sweet 16 in the state playoffs.”
For a lot of players those goals seem very lofty, but when you are Jarett Cox they seem attainable.
