Recruiting Report: Corey Smooth (2020)
While most college coaches are worrying about the incoming senior and junior classes, that doesn’t stop low major schools from reaching out to younger players that have a chance to be special. Often times, that gives them an opportunity that they wouldn’t have a couple years down the road when the recruit is speaking mostly with mid-high majors. One of those recruits is 5’10 Corey Smooth of Archbishop Rummel.
Because of transfer rules, Corey had to sit out his freshman season at Rummel, but that doesn’t mean that he stopped working on his game. He spent that year and put on a significant amount of muscle, and that has made a world of difference in his game. He was always good at getting into the paint, but now he has the ability to score in traffic. Corey is also a great decision maker at the lead guard spot, and is able to get the ball to guys where they need it. He has spent the spring and summer playing with NOLA23, and that is where he has caught the attention of college coaches. “My role for NOLA23 is that I am a leader and playmaker. They rely on me to make players around me better. I am also a guy that brings us a lot of energy on the court.”
His play with NOLA23 has lead to him already picking up an offer heading into his sophomore season, which is rare but not unheard of for top players in the state. He received his first offer from D1 Lamar, and is also hearing from LA Tech and UL Monroe. Corey has a 2.7 GPA and has yet to take the ACT.
