Recruiting Report: Charlie Jacob (2018)
Totino-Grace/Minnesota Fury guard Charlie Jacob has successfully played both guard spots as a high school talent and has one year to go.
Jacob is the leader of a strong 2018 class of Eagles that includes Tyler Kittelson, Braeden Mischke, and Will Schmidt plus of course Charlie who scored nearly 15 a game.
Charlie both reflected on last year and looked forward to his upcoming year with NHR this weekend.
“Being a captain, I had to step into more of a leadership role this past season,” Charlie said. “I was used to being just an underclassmen that learned and observed all of the older guys, but this year I was an older guy, so I had to be more vocal and lead by example.
“Playing in our conference gave us an opportunity every week to play against top notch talent and against some of the best teams in the state. This pushed me to work harder and find different ways to be successful in such a gauntlet of a conference.
“Our goal was to win state but we fell short. Although it hurt, I know that next year we will come back a stronger, smarter, and better prepared team and will have learned from our mistakes.”
The goal is once against the state tournament and Charlie will have to play more roles with guys like Sam Smith, Zach Ban, Rocky Kreuser, and Nate Kavolak graduating.
“I’m trying to get more explosive as well as working on my ability to get to the rim,” Charlie said. “Becoming a better on ball defender is also key and I know that if I’m going to hoop at the next level I have to become a lockdown defender, especially as a PG.”
Charlie is playing point guard for the Fury who is 26-6 on the season after seven events already played.
“Playing with the Fury has been great for me,” Charlie told us at Prep Hoops. “Just being able to go against my teammates in practice is helping me learn and grow.
“The biggest thing I have learned is that there are a lot of good hoopers out there, so if you want to play at the next level you have to be serious about getting better. If you don’t commit yourself to being in the gym and the weight room daily then someone else will take your spot and realize their goal of playing in college instead of you.”
Charlie and his Fury teammates have a six and a half week break before they get going again in July. Charlie has an offer from North Dakota School of Minnesota and they are one of many calling Charlie regularly.
“I’m hearing from Cornell, SD School of Mines, Bemidji State, University of St. Thomas, University of Chicago, Emory, and others.
“I just visited St. Thomas last week and don’t have any plans to visit any schools in the immediate future. I’m just looking for a high academic school that I can play at, the level doesn’t matter.”
