Prospect Spotlight: Reece Sommers (2019)
Linn-Mar’s 6-foot-3 small forward Reece Sommers has one big goal on his mind, and that’s to bring a state title back to North Scott.
While others may be wrapped up in exposure and recruitment along with their high school goals, Sommers seems dead-set on his one major goal.
“A lot of offers and exposure come from when these guys are playing AAU, but that really wasn’t my main concern. I don’t need to go to college and play basketball, but I’m really just focused on these next two years and helping North Scott win a state championship,” said Sommers.
“These next two years a state championship is a big goal of mine.”
The versatile wing is forgoing his 16U season of grassroots ball, and instead is electing to workout on his own time, and playing with the Lancers during a busy June of team camps.
“I’m really focusing on my own skill set, and I’ll play with my team in June and I hope we can build a lot then,” said Sommers.
“Multiple times a week I’m working on my game. We graduated six seniors so I’m going to have to up my role next season.”
As a junior next winter his role will increase dramatically from his role off the bench this season. Sommers says he’ll be a glue guy for this team, and like he did his sophomore season, he’ll do the gritty things others may not want to.
“I like to do the things that most people don’t like to do, like rebound, take charges and things like that. And I think I have a capability of stepping out and shooting it when I need to.,” said Sommers, who averaged 3.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per game this past winter.
“I was a sixth-man, I would come off the bench, snag rebounds, play defense and just be ready to shoot and score when I needed to.”
He added: “I’m definitely working to be more explosive, that will help me out on the wing. And I’m especially working on my jump-shot, that’s coming along and I’m really excited about that.”
And though college basketball is not his first priority now, he says if the opportunity presents itself down the road, he’d certainly consider it.
“If I get a good look or a team wants me then I’d definitely give it some serious thought,” said Sommers.
