Hughes is an athletic forward who was productive around the basket for Whitehall all game. Hughes has some vertical pop when he gets a head of steam and threw down some impressive dunks. I also thought Hughes had solid mechanics on his jumper and wasn’t afraid to shoot the mid-range. This is an athletic forward that JUCO and Division III programs will want to take a look at.
Powell stands at 6’5 and can shoot it, which will get small college programs interested. Powell needs to get in the weight room and improve his toughness, but a college program can help him with that. Based on his height, shooting and basketball IQ, I think his best basketball is ahead of him. New Albany took a disappointing loss in their opener but with Powell, Sam Dunn and some other younger pieces, the Eagles should have a competitive season in the OCC.
Buchtel has lost some players to transfer out of the program and the team looks pretty different from the one fans saw last season that was poised to bring everybody back. Maxwell was the beneficiary of these transfers out as he’s now in the starting lineup and made the most of his opportunity with knocking down jumpers and looking confident with the ball in his hands. While Buchtel’s superstars will take most of the defensive attention, it’s up to players like Maxwell to produce when they get the ball swung to them and he delivered despite the Griffins falling on Saturday.
Jr Bates
Jr Bates
Bates was the player who got the neutral crowd going more than anybody else on Saturday. Standing at just 5’4, Bates is the smallest prospect on the court. That size didn’t stop him from leading his team in scoring with a flurry of 3-point shots in the second half. Bates was confident on the ball and got defenders in the air when they tried to contest. Bates has a very bright future playing under his dad at Pickerington North and the Panthers have a unique mix of senior and underclassmen talent on their roster.
Fridline was playing with a cast on his shooting hand but was still getting buckets for a CVCA squad that was playing shorthanded. Fridline was running off screens like he was a splash brother, showing off his shooting scalability and stamina. Fridline’s shot making kept CVCA in the game longer than many expected, and he had another big game on Tuesday as well. Fridline will need to continue to play well if CVCA wants to compete for a regional title once they are back to 100%.
STVM always has a couple glue guys that could be solid small college prospects who help them win games, this season Modugno is one of those guys. Modugno knocked down shots from the outside, played tough defense, took care of the basketball. He won’t fill up the stat sheet but STVM is going to win games this season with their defense and timely shot-making and Modugno checks both of those boxes.
