Midwest Live!: Sunday Standouts (Part I)
2018 Tyler Kelley, 6’5 G/F (Iowa Mavs Purple 17U)
We become more and more impressed each time we see this big, athletic guard take the floor. He’s able to can a 3-ball, but is best at banging in the post and exploiting mismatches against smaller guards. He’s big enough to see over defenses, and does a great job crashing the boards. This West Delaware junior is certainly a scholarship player.
2018 Kyler Bell, 6’1 G (Iowa Mavs Purple 17U)
Like Kelley, Bell is a guy we like more and more each time we see him. An athletic and active off-guard, his defense is definitely a strength, and often leads to buckets for him on offense. He was athletic enough to go toe-to-toe with some of the MOKAN EYBL guys in a semifinal loss, and should have a big season next winter for Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
2018 Peter Timmerman, 6’5 SF (Iowa Mavs Purple 17U)
Another guy who we likely have underrated a bit, he’s currently ranked 67th in 2018, he’ll be moved up into the top-50 in next month’s new installment. A big wing, who cans a ton of 3s, but certainly capable of banging down low. Timmerman was able to hold his own in the paint against MOKAN EYBL, and should have some Division II schools intrigued.
2020 Gabriel Madsen, 6’4 SG (Wisconsin Playground Warriors 15U)
A sniper, this big shooting guard drilled five 3s in his team’s win over Iowa Mavs in the semifinals. He was one of the best five shooters I saw this weekend, and I was at a ton of games. With that combo of size and shooting prowess, it won’t be long before Division I offers roll in.
2020 Jalen Johnson, 6’6 G (Wisconsin Playground Warriors)
He’s just a freshman, but very developed physically and plenty skilled. Johnson may have been the best prospect I saw all weekend, and his combo of finesse, skill and above the rim explosiveness make him a high-major Division I prospect. He told me after the game he has no offers, that will change very soon.
2020 Masen Miller, 5’10 G (Iowa Barnstormers 15U)
It doesn’t take much space for this dead-eye shooter to get his shot off, and with a quick and precise jumper, he’s established himself as one of the best shooters in Iowa. He nailed three 3s against Wisconsin Playground Warriors, and scored a team-high 17 points in the loss. He was 44 percent from deep as a frosh with Regina, look for that number to go up over the next three seasons.
