There were definitely some under the radar players in attendance, and we caught a good glimpse of what they can bring to the table. Our focus was geared towards the 9th/12th grade boys divisions. Let’s look at a couple combo players who gave their team a needed boost.
Cole Baumgardner- Train Harder (G, Seven Lakes High School)
Cole was quite the knockdown shooter in the first game, scoring almost all of his points on the perimeter. He proceeded to hit 8/10 3 pointers and scored 28 points out of his teams’ 70 total. He was a master at finding the open spot on the court and being patient, waiting for his teammates to find him with the ball. His hustle was also a key factor, never putting his head down and being an encourager to his teammates. Cole also had 5 assists and 3 rebounds in Train Harder’s 70-68 victory over the Lake Houston Conquerors in the first game of the 9th/10th boys division.
AmenEl Tadesse- Train Harder (G, Seven Lakes High School)
Mr. Tadesse had a great showing on Saturday at the Alodia tournament, absolutely controlling the ball and running the offense for his Train Harder squad. He made a good guard combo alongside Cole Baumgardner and was unstoppable getting to the basket. He had 22 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds in the first game of the tournament against a tough LHC team. AmenEl was also vocal on defense and was a constant source of motivation for his teammates. He again showed his dominance with 21 points and 5 rebounds in a second contest against the Houston Vice team. He was also crucial playmaking in the second game as well, throwing 8 assists.
Matthew Spradlin- Lake Houston Conquerors (F, Homeschool)
Matthew was very dominant in the post during his team’s first game of the tournament, scoring all of his points under the basket and being physical on defense. He came away with 21 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, scoring a double-double in the process. He also knew when to make the extra pass off the block and put his teammates in perfect position to knock down shots, diming 5 assists. Spradlin was very much a key factor in his team’s 59-40 victory over a physical Mo City Ballers squad.
Clay Richmond- Lake Houston Conquerors ( G, Homeschool)
Clay was very efficient on the offensive end against Mo City and controlled the pace with his leadership and ability to handle the ball. The best part about Clay’s game was that he played very unselfishly, always deferring to his teammates, making that one extra play. In his squads’ first contest, Richmond scored 15 points and also added 10 assists, proving to be a true point guard with his court vision. He was also not afraid to crash the boards and he came away with 7 rebounds under the basket. Clay was also a menace on defense and was always pressuring the ball heavily in a 59-40 win over the Mo City Ballers team.
John Coleman- Houston Vice ( F, Magnolia West High School)
Coleman showed to be a very emotional leader in his teams’ victory against the Train Harder squad. He found his shot from beyond the arc late in the game, and scored 16 points driving to the rim as well as being physical on the block, grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing 4 assists as well. He was also a good free throw shooter, going 3 for 3 from the foul line. His Vice squad ended up with the win against Train Harder, by a score of 68-53.
