Scouting and Highlights: Ross Koella (2017)
The 6’6″ senior big man for Grand Haven could be a good fit at a JuCo, D3 or NAIA school in need of a big. He excels at rebounding and finishing around the rim. He could work well on a team that needs a big to set screens, rebound and finish efficiently around the rim.
Here’s my take on Koella’s game
Strengths:
Finishing – He’s a solid finisher around the rim. He isn’t the greatest at creating his own shot, but he can finish off dump-offs and offensive rebounds. Overall, he’s got a good touch around the rim.
Rebounding – He’s a strong rebounder. He knows how to use his size and strength to box out and secure the board. While he’s not going to leap over anybody for a board, he does a good job boxing out in order to prevent more athletic opponents from jumping over him.
Strength – His strength helps make up for a lack of height for a big guy. He’s capable of banging in the post for position. His strength benefits him on both sides of the ball.
Defense – Overall, he’s a a solid defender. While he’s not outstanding at anything in particular, he’s definitely not weak in any area of defense. He’s capable of blocking shots and getting steals. He’s also, capable of extending out to the perimeter to hedge a screen, as he’s got good mobility for a big.
Areas For Development:
Shooting – Whether or not he’s capable of stretching the floor and shooting the three doesn’t matter if he never looks for it. At 6’6″, it would be extremely beneficial for Koella to be able to shoot the three. In addition to the three, a mid-range game would be beneficial as well.
Athleticism – While he’s got decent athleticism, it could be better, especially being undersized for his position. An increase in explosiveness will help all areas of his game.
