Scouting and Highlights: Steve Pearson (2020)
Steve Pearson is one of the top freshmen in the state, coming in at number five in our rankings. At just 6’1″, he’s one of the best dunkers in the state, in any class. He’s insanely athletic and already built physically, so the sky is the limit for Pearson.
Here’s my take on his game:
Strengths:
Athleticism – He’s consistently putting down highlight-reel dunks. His leaping ability allows him to play bigger than he is, as he can rebound, contest, and even block shots over taller opponents. His explosiveness makes him tough to guard from all areas on the court.
Rebounding – Although he’s only 6’1″, he rebounds as if he’s 6’5″. He’s capable of going up and getting it with the best of them. He’s also very strong with the ball, so if he gets his hands on it, usually it’s secure.
Defense – He plays in a high-speed, pressure defense system for his high school squad, so he’s used to getting up in people. Given his athletic ability and his solid physical build, he will be able to defend with the best of them at any level. His leaping ability allows him to contest shots of much taller opponents.
Finishing – This comes with athleticism, but he’s not all dunks. He’s got a soft touch around the rim. He can finish through contact as well. If he gets a lane to the rim, there’s a high chance he’s finishing or going to the free throw line.
Areas For Development:
Playmaking – This is the piece of his game that, if developed, will make Pearson one of the elite players in his class. He plays more as a combo guard, but if he wants to really take his game to the next level, he will need to become more of a primary playmaker. His playmaking ability is not bad by any means, but he has a habit of taking a backseat and letting his teammates make the play.
Shooting – Similar to the playmaking, Pearson is by no means a bad shooter. However, with the game being such a perimeter, three-point shooting orientated game, guards need to be automatic when left open. If he becomes known for his shooting as much as he’s known for his dunking, he’ll be able to play at any level.
