This weekend started one of the most wonderful times of the year for high school hoops: tournament time. Trent Arena in Kettering hosted 3 Division II sectional games. These are the 5 players that impressed the most.
Christian Montague (2017)- Christian had a huge game for the Chaminade-Julienne Eagles and was a major part in their victory over Waynesville. He finished with 29 points, 8 rebounds 2 assists and 2 steals. Christian beat the Spartans with his outside shooting and attacking off the dribble. When he wasn’t scoring, he was setting up his teammates to score and playing suffocating defense.
Storm Cook (2017)- Storm Cook was shooting so well from beyond the arc on Friday that I thought he was Stephen Curry in disguise. Storm went 7-12 from the three point line and scored 26 points for Dunbar in a win over Bellbrook. He also had 3 assists and 2 steals. Storm had a few threes from college range and had no problems hitting those shots. Storm’s on the ball defense was incredible and he definitely proved why he is one of the best guards in Dayton.
P’hariz Watkins (2017)- P’hariz came off the bench for Chaminade-Julienne during their win, but he played like an all-star throughout the game. He had 21 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. In fact, if it weren’t for Storm Cook’s incredible shooting performance, P’hariz might have claimed that award instead. He went 4-8 from 3 point range, but was knocking down shots from college range as well. P’hariz has an attacking mentality when he possesses the ball and isn’t afraid to take his man one-on-one if he’s not shooting from 3 point range.
Thomas Myers (2019)- Thomas recorded a double-double for Clinton-Massie in their victory over Middletown Madison. He used his midrange shooting touch along with his strength in the paint to score 13 points and used his aggressive mentality to grab 11 rebounds. Thomas also showed great court vision for a big man.
Caleb McConnell (2018)- Caleb also recorded a double-double in a win over Bellbrook with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists. Caleb especially impressed me with his defensive skills. He played great on the ball defense, and even jumped the passing lanes to get steals. One of those steals led to a nice breakaway dunk during the game. Caleb also impressed by being able to use both his right and left hands to shoot and dribble the ball.
