In its first year the Mitten Recruit Showcase produced a competitive 60 player field at the Oakland Field House in Rochester Hills. Following are five of the top standouts from the deep field.

While there was a good crop of upperclassman who I wrote about earlier this week. The meat of the field was 2025 class (and lower in one case) Several young players from a wide swath across the state showed out. Here are five that caught my eye.

Class of 2025

[player_tooltip player_id="1300920" first="Carson" last="Vis"] 6-3 Grand Rapids South Christian (pictured at top of article) Wow. I don’t usually start an evaluation that way but what else can I say. First caught my eye at the Ferris St Exposure camp in August. But simply took it to another level on Saturday. Was one of the best players at the camp regardless of class. While he did not take home the title was in it at the end of both the three point shooting contest and the King of the Hill. Reminds me a little of fellow Westside underclassmen [player_tooltip player_id="1112374" first="Durral" last="Brooks"]. In that he excels without really having a position. At this point he is just a straight basketball player. Dunked, hit threes, good passer in both transition and the half court. Equally as good going to either his left or his right. I could keep going but I’ve got to save some things for the next four years. A lot of next level young talent in the Sailors program. [player_tooltip player_id="1223499" first="Jake" last="Vermaas"] and this young man are going to be problem in the next few years.

Mason Parker 5-9 Troy Like Vis was also arguably one of the best players in the camp regardless of class. Plays with composure and a demeanor that makes you think he believes he can play anywhere. His game backed this belief up. Had not one but two signature moves he used throughout the day. Used them to put on a clinic in the King of the Hill competition (1-on-1) The first was a quick and efficient step back that allowed him to get any shot off despite his size. The second was an explosive spin that allowed him to snake through the lane. Excellent shooter with a smooth left handed release. Flashy but composed ball handler as well. Younger brother of Brody Parker (Oakland) and plays like someone who grew up in gyms. Definitely a prospect to follow in the 2025 class.

Andrew Ashwood 5-10 Romulus Summit Academy North Shooting appeared to be the strength of this point guard. Advanced to semi finals of the three point shooting contest. Continued strong play during the scrimmages. Finished well at the rim despite smaller build. Explosive leaping ability aids in this process. Also used this to collect a few impressive blocks that you don’t usually from a player his size. The Dragons have a deep an older backcourt rotation featuring [player_tooltip player_id="863928" first="Orlando" last="Lovejoy"]. So it might be a little bit before you hear this name. But if Ashwood keeps playing like he did Saturday it will come in due time.

Jase Becher 6-8 Linden The tallest player in the camp was also one of the youngest. Showed a lot of potential and upside. Appeared to struggle in the earlier portions of the camp that involved a lot of ball handling and shooting. That being said at the time I was taking these notes. I was not yet aware of his age. In retrospect he actually did pretty good for a player of his size who yet to play in a high school game. However once the camp moved to the 5-on-5 scrimmages he really took off. He is bit unorthodox and mechanical in the post. But he has a soft touch around the basket and does not shy away from contact. Competed hard defensively and had a few nice blocks at the rim. Linden has been pumping out guards lately such as Blake Lund (Lawrence Tech) among others. Now that they have moved on. College recruiters might need to start looking at the Eagles frontcourt.

Class of 2026

Keyshaun Summerville 5-9 Lansing Waverly We are going to get even younger for our last player. This is a eight grade point guard who physically looks like an eight grader. But he doesn’t play like one. Pass first point guard who already plays with his head up and good court awareness. Plenty of speed already and will probably only increase as his body fills out. Coming off an excellent performance at the Bank Hoops Underclassmen All State Camp. Battle tested as he ran Bates Fundamentals this summer as well. Part of a strong young contingent from Waverly that should be making some noise in the next few years.
