Genoa’s 6-foot-3 wing Jake Plantz currently checks in as Ohio’s 37th-ranked 2019, and is hoping that his recruitment might start up this summer.
He’ll be switching grassroots programs for his 16U season, and will run with Team Toledo. He’s hoping that helps his recruitment get off the ground.
“I’m hoping for more letters to come soon,” said Plantz. “I’ve gotten a couple camp invites and stuff like that for basketball. But I’ve also been getting some mail for baseball as well.”
He said he has no preference between baseball and basketball, and whichever he gets the best offer in, he’ll plan to play in college.
“I take all my sports serious, and I like baseball and basketball the same,” said Plantz. “I think it’s too early to tell which I’ll play in college. It probably will come down to which one I get more letters in, and where I get the best opportunity.”
On the hardwood, Plantz describes his game as being versatile, able to score from anywhere on the floor.
“I feel like I’m a mismatch,” he said. “I can drive to the hoop and get to the basket that way, or I can post-up a taller defender. I’m able to blow-by some guys, and a smaller defender I’ll take down on the block.”
Though he was dissatisfied with his early-season play, Plantz says he’s been pleased with his past several games.
“I wouldn’t say I played to my full potential early in the season, I think I was putting too much pressure on myself,” said the sophomore standout. “But the last six or seven games I feel like I’ve been playing good; I’ve been under control and my numbers are up.
He added: “But I don’t get too distracted by that stuff (statistics). I like to get my teammates involved, and just do whatever it takes to win.”
In just a few months he will embark on his 16U season with new grassroots squad, Team Toledo. He played with Toledo Ice last offseason.
“The goal is to play against the best competition,” said Plantz. “And we’ll be going to bigger tournaments this summer with Team Toledo.”
