East Jefferson 49, Bonnabel 46
I want to call this the upset of the night, but I can’t be certain that it is. By record alone, East Jefferson and Bonnabel are pretty equal with one another, both hovering around 20 wins while around five losses, but the strength of schedule difference is pretty astounding. (That being the main reason Bonnabel was No. 3 in the power rankings while East Jefferson was No. 29.) So those of us that thought District 8-5A was a Bonnabel-Chalmette-Helen Cox show now have a new character to add to the mix.
Assumption 62, A.J. Ellender 54
Here’s another one that I can’t decide if it’s an upset or not. Sure, the power points (and certain portions of the schedule) tell you Ellender is better than Assumption, but Ellender is on one of the biggest slides of any of the state’s better teams (more on that in the High Five on Monday).
Benton 58, Minden 55
No, this isn’t going to move the needle in terms of big-game radars, but my gut tells me these two teams are going to be dancing a tango with the No. 32 and final spot in the playoff bracket all season long, so this win gives Benton the inside track there.
Bossier 56, Huntington 38/Washington-Marion 66, Crowley 58
I’m combining these two scores because they both prove the point I have to make: there is no parity in 4A. Bossier and Washington-Marion are included in a very small elite class in 4A – heck, they might be the only ones – and everyone else has a pretty big gap between them and the elite.
Carroll 59, Madison 55
If I continued doing these posts, I could probably put 75 percent of District 2-3A’s scores here: Carroll, Madison and Wossman will consistently be top 8 teams in 3A from here on out, while Richwood and Union are proven to be tough outs. (Union took Wossman to overtime earlier this week, from what I hear.)
University High 61, Glen Oaks 54/North Caddo 42, Calvary Baptist 40
The common theme: elite teams surviving scares.
Did UHigh survive the one scare it was going to have in district play last night? With a minute and 50 seconds left, Glen Oaks was up by five; UHigh somehow ended up winning by seven. Nick Flory scored 17 for UHigh in the comeback, most of them coming in the second half.
Rayville 92, Ferriday 61
I’ve wrote in the past that Rayville might be the only team in 2A that can challenge Madison Prep for the state title, and running Ferriday – the No. 3 team in 2A in the last power points rankings – off the floor like that might prove the hypothesis.
Southern Lab 50, White Castle 47
I am guilty of seeing 1A as a classification that will be run by teams in the northeastern corner of the state – just look at the power rankings dominated by teams like Lincoln Prep, Delhi, Delhi Charter, Sicily Island, Arcadia, Tensas, etc. I’ve been ignoring White Castle, and this result proves that team can compete with the best in small school basketball in this state.
