With the grassroots season now in full swing, teams and individuals are really beginning to hit their stride and show what they are capable of. With that in mind, here are five standout 2023 guards from the tournament:
Damareon Williams | 2023 | 5’9’’ Point Guard | THP Elite Orange | Del Valle HS – Williams showed off a nice package of floaters and runners. He also shot the three well of the bounce. The Del Valle prospect is wired to score and is extremely dangerous once he gets into a rhythm on offense. He possesses the necessary skill and quickness to overcome being a bit undersized.
Kade Douglas | 2023 | 6’2’’ Shooting Guard | Urban DFW Elite 16U | Lancaster HS – Douglas displayed excellent ball handling skills and navigated the floor well on Friday. He put the ball in the basket in a variety of ways. The Lancaster guard made threes off the dribble and finished through contact at the rim for three-point plays. He was aggressive as a scorer but still played smart.
Connor Newton Connor Newton 5'8" | PG Denton Guyer | 2023 State TX | 2023 | 5’9’’ Point Guard | Dallas Mustangs 16U | Denton Guyer HS – Newton did a good job of balancing his scoring and distributing duties. He is a reliable shooter with a quick release. The Denton Guyer floor general knocked down triples off the dribble and from the catch. As a playmaker, he delivered accurate passes and took care of the basketball. Additionally, he handled the ball well against pressure, utilizing his quickness and savvy.
Dylan Nguyen Dylan Nguyen 5'9" | PG Timber Creek | 2023 TX | 2023 | 5’6’’ Point Guard | Forth Worth Jayhawks | Keller Timbercreek HS – Nguyen was speedy with the basketball on Sunday. He displayed a quick first step and wasn’t afraid to go right at players with a significant size advantage. The 2023 guard had some crafty finishes at the basket and showed good body control. On defense, he had quick hands and picked the pockets of several opponents.
Ovie Agbigbe | 2023 | 6’3’’ Shooting Guard | Urban DFW Elite 16U | Midlothian HS – Agbigbe put together an outstanding shooting performance in his opening game of the tournament. He drained several threes in the matchup. His off-ball movement was fantastic, and he shot the ball very well when coming off of screens. This is one of those guys who can heat up in an instant from behind the arc.
