Each time we’ve talked to the 6-foot-guard he’s got fresh news to share on the recruiting front, and this time it’s a North Carolina Division I program that’s been added to the mix.
“Drake sends me stuff and they’ve come down to my open gym and talked to me, and then they said they’d come to one of my games. And a new one I’ve picked up is Elon, they saw me play down in Florida this summer and they told Hank (Huddleson) they liked me and they’ve been sending me letters,” said Vaske.
“And then South Dakota called me recently and I know they’re interested. And then North Dakota has been talking to my high school coach and Hank.”
His junior season at Norwalk is what’s most important to him right now, but he’s aware that the next 10 months will be critical for his recruitment.
“I guess I think about it a lot, and my high school team is what’s important now, but this summer will be a big one for me,” said Vaske. “I’m working hard trying to get it (recruitment), and I’m just going to let it come to me and I think it will happen.”
Becoming a more athletic version of himself has been Vaske’s biggest priority the past several months, and he’s come a long way since his freshman season.
“This summer I really worked on getting bigger and stronger and I’ve been in the weight room a lot. And another thing I’ve been working on is my footwork — just trying to get quicker and a lot faster because I always felt like that was always a weakness of mine, just not being as quick as some other guys,” said Vaske.
So far this season his Norwalk Warriors are 4-3, but Vaske and freshman Bowen Born have been building a chemistry in the backcourt that will make them one of the state’s best for the next two seasons.
“It’s a lot easier to have someone else who can handle the ball and bring the ball up the floor. And Bowen can handle the pressure and knock down shots,” said Vaske. “And we work well together, we’re like the same guy, he’s just a little bit younger. But we work well together.”
And for Vaske, his goal the rest of the season is to be the vocal leader of his team.
“I’m not a super vocal person but I’ve gotten a lot better at that this season with my team. If guys have a questions they look to me,” said Vaske. “And if it’s a close game or a tight situation it’s a lot easier to handle because of my experience.”
