Council Bluffs Lincoln: After losing five standout senior starters from last year’s state qualifying team, it was probably thought the Lynx might be in rebuild mode this season. Not even close. Landon Torneton has emerged as a bonafide star, and Troy Houghton was a great addition to the team coming over from Omaha. Lincoln is undefeated with an average margin victory of 21 points.
Fort Dodge: We could see the Solomon Clayton machine starting to become a dominant this past summer on the 17U circuit, and he is a big reason why the Dodgers are off to a 3-1 start. After losing their season-opener to Valley, the Dodgers have wins over Lincoln, Marshalltown, and a big one over Hoover. Brother Solomon and Malcolm Clayton lead the team in scoring.
Spirit Lake: What an addition sophomore big-man Owen Coburn was for the Indians this season. The 6-foot-10 center is averaging 21.8 points on 76 percent shooting, and 11.3 rebounds per game this season. Spirit Lake — which lost two Division I players from last season– is off to a 4-0 start, including a huge win over Western Christian last Friday.

Hoover: The Huskies came into the season as our preseason No. 2 in 4A. They did lose a lot from last season’s state tournament qualifier, but with a program that reloads rather than rebuild we thought they’d be among the state’s elite again. We still think that could happen, but it’s been a rocky start for Hoover, which after a 2-0 beginning has lost three straight, to DeLaSalle (MN), Fort Dodge and Des Moines North.
Marshalltown: It’s been an abysmal start to the season for the Bobcats, which are not only 0-4, but a bad 0-4. Last week they lost to Newton and Fort Dodge, by 30 and 24, respectively.
Whiting: It’s looking bleak for the Warriors in the early going. An 0-5 start becomes especially dreadful when the losses come by an average of 50 points per game.
