The 2019-2020 Monsignor Martin League (Buffalo NY) was highly competitive and produced many memorable moments for both teams and individuals alike. This article will preview the 2020-2021 St. Francis Red Raiders.
2019-2020 St. Francis Red Raiders – Overall Record 9-16, Conference Record 6-6
The Red Raiders took a step back last season, going from a 7-5 finish in their conference games in 2018-2019 to just 6-6 in 2019-2020. They struggled the most at neutral sites, going 0-5, including a season-closing defeat to St. Joseph’s on February 29, 2020. They were average to poor on offense last season, finishing 6 out of 8 in team scoring at 60.8 points per game, 6th out of 8 in team free throw percentage at 62%, and dead last in team three-point percentage at 28%.
Though they struggled to score the ball, their defense carried them to victory on many occasions. Some of their wins featured holding opponents to 53 points, 52 points (twice), and 38 points. As a team, they finished with 7.2 steals per game, good for fourth place in the conference. They also took the third most charges in the Monsignor Martin League, registering 12 total.
In order to improve in 2020-2021, the Red Raiders will need to share the ball more, shoot better, and match or exceed their defensive output from 2019-2020. The best news for St. Francis is they return their leading scorer from a season ago. Peyton Consigli, now a Senior, scored 14.6 points per game last year, good for 6th among all conference returnees. Fellow Senior Ameil Collins, a 12 point per game scorer last season, will no doubt be tasked with exceeding his individual output in 2020-2021. One more player to watch for is two-sport athlete (football) Logan Reaska. Just a sophomore, the rugged Reaska will bring much-needed toughness and consistency to the 2020-2021 Red Raider frontcourt.
