Continue ReadingEarly in September, Trotwood-Madison and University of Dayton alumni Chris Wright announced the Flyght World Championships. The event, which will take place in Lausanne, Switzerland in June 2021, will bring together some of the best talent in Europe to compete against one another. Wright took things a step further announcing he would be bringing a team from Dayton to compete in this event. 30 players in the 2022 and 2023 classes were invited to tryout for the opportunity to represent Dayton and the United States in this incredible event. I am honored to be covering this team and event which adds further exposure opportunities for these young prospects. While tryouts take place next week, I will be highlighting the players invited as these are some of the best players you will find from the Dayton area. I start off this exciting series by sharing some of the top 2022 Guards trying out.
Mekhi Elmore Mekhi Elmore 6'1" | PG Thurgood Marshallchooligh | 2022 State OH (Dunbar)- The Dunbar product spent the last two seasons playing at Thurgood Marshall before moving over to the Wolverines for the upcoming season. Elmore is a lefty with a great shooting stroke to go along with solid physicality and frame and improved slashing on the offensive end. Mekhi can defend the perimeter and has put himself on Low Major radars right now. He will be one of the top scoring threats at the tryout and could attract even more attention.
Jacob Conner Jacob Conner 6'7" | PF Alter | 2022 State OH (Alter)- Conner is probably on your radar now as he had arguably the biggest blowup so far this season as his recruitment skyrocketed after strong showings this Summer. The 6 foot 7 WG has length, explosiveness, defensive pressure among other factors that have attracted the attention of multiple D1 programs. Conner showed he can handle an offense as he ran the Point for Alter last year, but has the potential to play off the ball and still make a difference. If he continues to add to his frame and show he can use his bigger body, he’s going to be one of the area’s best prospects and could find himself playing at the MM level.
Tom House Tom House 6'5" | SF Centerville | 2022 State OH (Centerville)- The 6 foot 5 SG is known across Dayton and even within the state as the best shooter in the City. How can you argue with that? He’s accurate, consistent, and fundamentally sound as a shooter. His ability to defend the perimeter and willingness to defend 94 feet is impressive and admirable. At 6 foot 5, he has the size to accompany his shooting touch to be considered one of the top prospects at the LM/D2 level.
Ryan Chew Ryan Chew 5'11" | PG Bellbrook | 2022 State OH (Alter)- Chew is one of the most unselfish players you will find in the Dayton area. Period. His court vision, speed, quick trigger in the midrange game, and versatility are just some of the things college coaches and myself like in him. Chew shocked everyone this Summer by transferring to Alter and joining Conner in an absolutely loaded backcourt. His presence will allow Conner to be more of a scoring threat and utilize his wide range of offensive skill. Chew right now should be a target to D2s/high NAIA programs.
Keon Wright (Fairmont)- Wright is one of the more unknown players in the area and has not received the interest he deserves. The 6 foot combo guard can score in a multitude of ways and showed he could be a primary scoring option for Fairmont. His range is one of the aspects of his game I really enjoy watching as he has the confidence and fundamentals to knock down perimeter shots. Showed this Summer consistency to put the ball on the floor and penetrate from the wings.
Anthony Johnson Anthony Johnson 6'3" | PG Midfield | 2022 State AL (Fairmont)- Johnson moved into Kettering last year and immediately made himself known for the Firebirds. The 5 foot 11 PG doesn’t score a ton of points but is capable of giving you 15+ points when needed. His style of play is similar to Chew where Johnson orchestrates an offense in ways beyond scoring. Solid defender and an overall leader. As he continues to develop his jump shot, Anthony could find himself on radars at the D3 level.
