The same can be said for the newly ranked lead guards as they have the ability to make plays at the next level. Here are the top newly ranked floor generals in the 2023 class.
Malachi Johnson Malachi Johnson 6'0" | PG Roselle | 2023 NJ , 5’11 Union
Johnson played up this summer with the NJ Panthers 16U team and showed why he is one of the top young players in Union County. The 5’11 guard has a good handle and knows how to finish around the basket. Johnson is more than just a driver as he has a nice release on his jumper and can move off the ball. He is a solid passer and moves his feet well on the defensive end. Johnson is a skilled point guard who is poised for a strong second season for the Farmers.
Sebastian Robinson Sebastian Robinson 6'2" | CG Roselle Catholic | 2023 State NJ , 6’2 Camden
Robinson may play off the ball at times for the Panthers, but he has the ability to run the show at the next level. The 6’2 guard is crafty with the ball in his hands and can beat his defender off the bounce. Robinson is a good passer and can knock down open jumpers on the perimeter. He fights for rebounds on both ends of the floor and plays solid on-ball defense. Robinson’s all-around game makes him the perfect third guard for Camden this year.
Carnegie Johnson Carnegie Johnson 6'0" | PG Blair Academy | 2023 State NJ , 5’11 Blair Academy
The Buccaneers may be filled with good guards, but that should not stop Johnson from making an impact. The 5’11 floor general is a blur in the open floor and knows how to beat his defender off the bounce. Johnson is a solid passer and can finish around the basket. He is an underrated rebounder and has quick hands on defense. Johnson may have to wait his turn behind Jaylen Blakes Jaylen Blakes 6'1" | PG Blair Academy | 2021 State #121 Nation NJ , but should still make an impact in 2020-21.
Nate Pluviose Nate Pluviose 5'10" | PG Pope John XXIII | 2023 State NJ , 5’10 Pope John XXIII
Pluviose had a strong summer for the NJ Panthers 15U squad, which should translate into a successful sophomore campaign. The 5’10 guard plays with poise on the ball and can beat his defender off the dribble. Pluviose is a good finisher around the basket and can make shots through contact. He is a good rebounder and is one of the top on-ball defenders in the class. Pluviose’s ability to make an impact on both ends of the floor should lead to a good year for Pope John XXIII.
Mehki Slye Mehki Slye 6'3" | CG Olympus Prep | 2023 State NJ , 6’3 Olympus Prep
Slye is a talented guard prospect who should be a good addition to the Olympus Prep high school team. The 6’3 guard has a good handle and uses his size to see over defenders. Slye can finish around the basket and does not mind contact. He is an underrated rebounder and works hard on the defensive end. Slye may not be the lead guard for Olympus Prep, but his ability to make plays will give him an opportunity to run the offense at times this season.
