Sure, each class has its own rankings, but we’re kicking it up a notch and consolidating the 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017 classes to create an all-class look of Iowa’s finest hoopsters. Below is Part IV of Iowa’s 30 best.
15-11
15. Garrett Franken, 6’7 G, Atlantic (2017)
This tall and lanky Atlantic wing has been one of the more versatile threats in the state over the past several seasons. He’s taller than most posts at the high school level, but was playing point guard for the Trojans last season. He’s seemingly comfortable with the ball in his possession or playing off the ball, and can of course post up smaller defenders in the paint. He signed with North Dakota earlier in the month in what seems to be a very nice get for the Fighting Hawks.
14. Drew Maschoff, 6’3 G, Ankeny (2017)
A Sioux Falls-signee, Maschoff is one of the most explosive and dynamic players in the state thanks in large part to his leaping ability and adept outside shooting. After leading the Hawks in scoring last season as the team’s lone junior starter, we think he’ll erupt this season, and he could lead the CIML (maybe all of 4A) in scoring.
13. Quinton Curry, 6’5 F, Valley (2017)
It was a tough offseason for this Valley Tigers standout. He suffered an ACL tear during a high school team camp at Drake in June, which forced him to miss what was going to be a very important 17U summer with Kingdom Hoops Elite. He ended up receiving some Division II offers in the summer despite not being able to showcase himself, and he signed with Rockhurst earlier this month. With aspirations of heading into the medical field in addition to playing college ball, it seems this bright and talented senior has an exciting future ahead.
12. Abe Kinrade, 6’6 SF, Maquoketa (2017)
This Iowa Barnstormer product is one of those guys that started exponentially rising in the 2017 rankings after his 16U summer. He was picked up by the ‘Stormers because of his great height, length and potential, and started to reach that potential by the end of his 16U summer. It started to come to a boil during his junior season with the Cardinals when he averaged 14.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. And subsequently he picked up offers from Army, North Dakota and Air Force — he committed to Air Force earlier this fall.
11. Jay Small, 6’1 G, Hinton (2017)
One of the better all-around athletes in the state, Small is one of those guys that’s good at everything he does. A standout on the baseball field and the starting quarterback too, it’s basketball that comes first for the Blackhawks sharpshooter. He picked up a Division I offer from South Dakota after his sophomore season, and has added a D2 offer from Northern State since. It appears he’ll play out his senior season to see what else he might be able to pick up. Expect to see some video game numbers from Small this season — he averaged 25.7 points per game at 2A Hinton last winter.
