He picked up an early offer from North Dakota after a stellar performance is last season’s state title run. And other Division I interest is starting to roll in.
“I took a visit to North Dakota last month and that was pretty fun, so they’ve been still talking to me. And I also took an unofficial to Illinois State for a junior day, and that was pretty cool,” said Mims.
“And my high school coach told me Davidson called him and was asking about me, and that they’d be in contact with me soon. And then South Dakota has been texting me, and Drake has been in touch and is sending a lot mail.”
With an interesting year ahead of him — that will include a junior season on state title contender followed by his 17U season — Mims says he’s just going to play his game, and hopes the recruitment falls into place.
“I just want to play, and I feel like I’ll know who the right school is at the right time. And hopefully I’ll get some more interest,” said Mims, who says he focused on his strength and quickness this past summer.
“What I really wanted to focus on was getting a lot stronger and quicker, and I feel like in the last few days of practice it’s been pretty noticeable. And I really wanted to get a more consistent 3, and I feel like it’s a lot more consistent now, and it feels pretty good.”
With his junior season set to start, Mims is eager to take the reins of the ultra-talented Saints, and fill the void left by 2016 guard Mitchell Burger.
“I think I’m going to have to step up and be a lot more of a leader this year. And now that Mitch (Burger) is gone I’ll have to have the ball in my hands a lot more,” said Mims. “I’ll have to score a lot this year, since Mitch was such a big piece to our offense, I’ll have to pick up where he left off.”
