I wanted to give a rundown of players from the state of Iowa that got to play this summer and showed well. Here is the class 4A point guards that stood out to me.
Reid Grant Reid Grant 6'1" | PG Johnston | 2021 State IA , 2021 – 6’2 PG – Kingdom Hoops 17U & Johnston High School
I’m not sure anyone saw their stock rise as much as Reid Grant Reid Grant 6'1" | PG Johnston | 2021 State IA did playing for Kingdom Hoops this summer. Garnering his first DI offers from Tennessee Tech, Coastal Carolina, and North Dakota. Grant showed everyone that watched what he can bring to a program as a pass first PG, who can also get a bucket when you call his number. In a few games I was able to watch this summer he had to have double digit assist numbers. The main thing about Reid is that he doesn’t back down from anyone, as he went up against high caliber PG’s all summer session and competed. If he got beat one play, he came back and got the next one and that’s a coaches dream. Grant will lead the Johnston Dragons this upcoming winter season, and I’m looking for more offers to come.
Tamin Lipsey Tamin Lipsey 6'2" | PG Ames | 2022 State #163 Nation IA , 2022 – 6’2 PG – D1 Minnesota/All Iowa Attack 17U & Ames High School
Lipsey might be the most interesting prospect in this group coming into the summer after coming off a knee injury that didn’t allow him to participate in last winter’s high school season. With recovery done and Lipsey ready to get back on the court he didn’t disappoint. The highly heralded recruit from Ames, already holds offers from Iowa State, Minnesota, and Nebraska, with the Minnesota offer coming this summer after his play with D1 Minnesota and the All Iowa Attack. Lipsey plays up a division in the 17U division and on a loaded D1 Minnesota team he is really good about spreading the ball, and making plays for his teammates. I’ll never forget the between the legs assist he had in Kansas City at the Hardwood Classic Session #2. Very smooth with the ball, and is just the ultimate competitor. More offers will come for Lipsey playing with Ames High School this winter.
Chase Henderson Chase Henderson 6'0" | PG Hoover | 2023 State IA , 2023 – 5’9 PG – All Iowa Attack 16U & DSM Hoover High School
The sophomore-to-be plays up a division as well with the All Iowa Attack and holds his own. Henderson is a gamer, who can get his own shot off the bounce, but is an efficient passer who creates for his teammates as well. Though he may be undersized in regards to his height, Henderson doesn’t shy away from going inside amongst the trees and can finish. As a freshman at Hoover he was the team’s leading scorer in Class 4A, CIML Metro league. That’s nothing to scoff at, especially since Hoover was a tough out for opponents. Henderson is a quick, crafty, coachable point guard who is going to make more waves this winter playing with Des Moines Hoover who has quite the firepower as well.
Jaron Crews, 2021 – 6’0 PG – All Iowa Attack 17U & Ankeny Centennial High School
Jaron Crews would have probably seen his stock rise even more this summer if it was a normal summer season, but nonetheless Crews impressed in the opportunities he had. Crews is a nice lead guard, who averaged 4.5 assists per game last winter season for the Jaguars to go along with 13.4 points per game and 2.5 rebounds per game. The thing that sticks out to me about Jaron is his ability to hit contested shots. He is efficient off the dribble pull-up out to 15 feet and reads the defense well to see where the ball needs to go. I’ll be looking for Crews to build on his summer season with Ankeny Centennial this coming winter and build some recruiting momentum.
Kenzie Reed Kenzie Reed 5'11" | PG Kennedy | 2023 State IA , 2023 – 5’10 PG – Kingdom Hoops 15U & Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School
When Reed got the ball this summer he went into attack mode for Kingdom Hoops. He was very good at getting by his defender and finding a crease into the defense in order to get to the basket and either find a teammate or finish inside at the hoop. Kenzie is a really quick guard who will see his stock rise over the next three years, and he got a good start this summer. If he can show he can put an efficient number up from three point land to go along with his crafty drives he will prove his importance to this in-state class of 2023. He will be looking to build upon his 8 PPG as a freshman this past year for the Cougars in the Mississippi Valley Conference.
Malik Allen Malik Allen 5'11" | PG Des Moines North | 2021 State IA , 2021 – 5’11 PG – Beyond Ball 17U & DSM North High School
A bouncy 5’11 PG from a deep Beyond Ball team, Allen showed off his athleticism this summer. He’s a really quick guard who can defend the opponents best player using his active hands and ability to sit in a stance. Allen is an efficient slasher or shooter and will pull if the defense dares to give him space. Allen has the ability to really fill it up when he gets going, and displayed that this past winter with performances where he averaged a touch over 26 points per game. Allen had some interest early on in his high school career and will be looking for that to pick up this winter season with Des Moines North High School.
James Glenn James Glenn 6'2" | PG Sep | 2021 State IA , 2021 – 6’1 PG – Beyond Ball 17U & Southeast Polk High School
James Glenn James Glenn 6'2" | PG Sep | 2021 State IA was a good scoring PG for Beyond Ball this summer who can score with range at the 3 point line. He can also a dish to teammates, as he was 2.5 per game assist PG for Southeast Polk this past winter season. He doesn’t back down from the trees inside when he gets to the basket and can finish through contact. In a deep lineup for Beyond Ball, Glenn was a mainstay on the court and you could tell by his playing time how important he is to the success of the team. James has an NAIA offer from William Penn on the table already and will be looking to bolster that list this winter with the Rams.
Trey Lewis Trey Lewis 5'10" | PG Johnston | 2022 State IA , 2022 – 5’9 PG – Pure Prep 16U & Johnston High School
There are some high level guards that are going to put on the Johnston Dragons jersey this coming winter, and Lewis is in that group. Lewis has a shorter stature, but what he lacks in height he definitely makes up for in his basketball ability. Lewis is a really good catch and shoot shooter at the three point line, at just a touch under 50% during the past high school season. To go along with that Lewis is a tough defender and has a really quick first step. He’s a good team first PG, who can spray the ball around to teammates and runs the offense efficiently to get the right shot. Lewis has visited several levels of programs so far in his high school career, and will look to build upon a good summer season this winter with a loaded Johnston Dragons team.
Armonniey Thomas Armonniey Thomas 6'2" | PG Marshalltown | 2022 State IA , 2022 – 6’0 PG – Pure Prep 16U & Marshalltown High School
Armonniey Thomas Armonniey Thomas 6'2" | PG Marshalltown | 2022 State IA burst onto the high school scene this past winter for the Bobcats. A very intriguing prospect in the class of 2022 running with the 16U Pure Prep team who can play both guard spots, but I like him as a scoring PG. He does a lot for Marshalltown during the school ball season, and is a facilitator that an offense can revolve around. He’s at his best in transition where he can use the dribble to advance it and get to the basket or he can kick out to a teammate for an open 3 point shot. He averaged 3 assists per game last winter and I could see that number growing as the Bobcats continue to grow and develop, as they were a fairly young team last season. Thomas will be a big part of Marshalltown’s success this upcoming season and will be looking for that first offer.
Ra’mir Scott Ra’mir Scott 5'11" | PG Waterloo East | 2021 State IA , 2021 – 5’9 PG – Waterloo Salvation 17U & Waterloo East High School
Ra’mir is a big shot PG, who gets the ball and can get downhill at defenders. He’s able to shoot the ball out to the 3 point line and beyond. One clip I saw of Scott’s was at the Ames Shootout where he hit a nice pull-up jumpshot in overtime of a back and forth game, and canned it to help his team win in sudden death. Scott led his Waterloo East team with 15 points per game this past season, to go along with 2.5 assists per game that I will be looking to improve even more this next season on a pretty loaded Trojans team. His ability to get defenders off balance is really good and has many counter moves to get by his defender. Some program could get a gem in Scott, and he will be hoping for that first offer this upcoming season with Waterloo East.
John Miller John Miller 5'10" | PG Davenport Central | 2021 State IA , 2021 – 5’10 PG – Iowa Barnstormers Gold 17U & Davenport Central High School
Miller first caught my attention at the Midwest Summer Live session in early July and I continued to watch him throughout the rest of the summer and have come away impressed. What stood out the most about Miller is his bulldog mentality and bully type swagger. Miller is very confident in his ability to take defenders off the dribble and excels at it with his low center of gravity and quick first step. He also on the other end of the floor will sit in a stance and excels as an on-ball defender for his team. The main thing I want to see improve in Miller’s game and what may separate him from other PG’s in this class is an efficient jump shot. If he can consistently hit jumpers for Davenport Central this upcoming winter season, he has a chance to elevate his stock as a prospect.
