was truly torn. He had made official visits to both South Dakota and Oregon State, he had a decision to make - and it was going to be a tough one. But after going over everything and conferring with those close to him, the tough 6-foot-3 guard from Central Catholic announced on Thursday afternoon that he would be joining the Coyotes and signing early with South Dakota.
"After a lot of thought and prayer with my family, we felt like it was a better opportunity for me at South Dakota," Weatherspoon said. "I loved the plan they had for me and all the effort they put in during my visit and when I left too. The belief they had in me was a lot and it just felt like home."
Weatherspoon made his decision after also visiting Oregon State, a trip he enjoyed. But when Weatherspoon thought back to his official visit to South Dakota's campus, he was impressed by the town of Vermillion as well as the people, the fan base, and the alumni. He watched practice and felt good about how he would fit into what they do and want from him. "They see me as a true point guard and being a leader and leading their team (while) continuing to work on my body," he said.
Weatherspoon can certainly credit the off-season for helping him earn the opportunity. After playing with the NW Rotary Rebels on the EYBL circuit and with Central Catholic at viewing events in June, he picked up the offer from South Dakota along with ones from San Diego, Stetson, and Oregon State. Playing at a high level helped him with his game as well. "It was a really good experience and I learned the business side of it as well," Weatherspoon said. "I learned the competitiveness and the levels there are to this. It's actually something I'm going to bring into this season and just dominate. I feel like my jumper started to blossom. I worked on it so much and I feel like I've seen one in every game. My jumper, my leadership and facilitating and getting to the basket and getting stronger."
"It was a really blessed experience because this time last year I had nothing," Weatherspoon continued. "A lot changed and I'm very thankful."
Now that his recruitment is done, Weatherspoon is focused on the upcoming season - one in which the Rams hope to atone for how last year ended. "I'm trying to go back to exactly where we were last year but finish this time," Weatherspoon said. "I want to go back to where we were and win it all this time. That's my expectations - I'm not trying to fall down to anything else."
Our congratulations go out to Weatherspoon and his family on his decision.
