, the choice was made in early September. The athletic 6-foot-4 guard from Central Catholic announced then that he'll be taking his talents to the University of Portland and while he was courted by a number of different options out of Oregon, the choice to stay at home was the best fit for him.
"It just felt like home when I went on my official visit there," Bongen said. "The coaching staff, the players - it just felt like where I should be right now, so that's why I chose them. I definitely like their style of play and I feel like it fits my game. I like to shoot the ball, come off screens, that type of stuff and just based off watching them and researching their school, I've seen that their program does a lot of stuff like that. I feel like it's going to be a place where I can develop a lot in my first couple of years."
Bongen had also previously visited Cal State Fullerton and there was interest from other schools. But as it usually is the case, it was the comfort and relationships that helped win out for his services. He's excited to play for head coach Shantay Legans. "I'm still getting to know him but I feel like we have a really good relationship," Bongen said. "It kind of feels like my relationship with (Central Catholic head) Coach (David) Blue right now and I feel like it's going to get to that point. He's a really great guy, a really good coach."
With his decision in the books, Bongen has been turning his attention to his senior season. He recently looked great in a recent open gym workout at Central Catholic with Pilots assistant coach Arturo Ormond in attendance and he's keeping it short and simple when it comes to 2026-27.
"I feel like expectations for me are to definitely just go kill, play my best, and show that I should be the number one player in the state," Bongen said. "Just go out and kill, hopefully get that state chip this year."
Our congratulations go out to Bongen and his family on his decision.
