Prep Hoops Iowa Freshman Showcase: Tony's Top Shooters

The second annual Prep Hoops Iowa Freshman Showcase took place in Des Moines on Sunday afternoon, with around 70 incoming freshmen and eighth graders taking the floor. Healey Hill and I were in attendance throughout the event taking notes on every player in attendance, and we'll have a slew of coverage coming throughout the next week. I was primarily responsible for covering Teams 1, 2, 5, and 6, while Healey handled 3, 4, 7, and 8. In this article, I take a look at five of the best shooters I saw on Sunday afternoon.    Dehmlow is small, listed at 5-5, but he's an electric shooting threat who can get scorching hot from behind the arc and carry his team for stretches offensively. He showed really good footwork and ball-handling, which helped him create some additional space to get his shot off, and showcased that he can bury shots routinely both off the dribble and the catch. He moves well without the ball in his hands and is ready to fire on the catch.     Wandrey is a bit of a streaky shooter, but when he gets it going, he can really shoot the ball. He has great form on his jumper, keeping his elbow in tight and getting good, tight rotation on his ball. He shoots it really well off the catch, moving well without the ball in his hands and doing a nice job getting his feet set on the catch. You could see his confidence growing throughout the afternoon, becoming more and more confident in his stroke and hunting for his shot as the day progressed.     A guard from Prairie who shoots it really well off the dribble, Pierre does a nice job utilizing the threat of his speed to get his defender to sag off of him a bit, allowing him to knock down shots from deep off the dribble. He gets the ball into his shooting pocket quickly off the dribble, allowing him to get his shot off largely uncontested because of how quickly he rises into his shot. In addition to his ability to shoot it from deep, he can play downhill and get to the rim, where he has great body control.     Larson is another really small (at this point) guard, but he's tough as nails and doesn't shy away from anyone around the bucket. He uses the threat of his jumper to open up the rest of his game, attacking the rim off the dribble and finishing through contact. A lefty guard with great footwork, he shoots it exceptionally well from the arc and has the feet and handles to create extra space to help get his shot off. He's a high IQ guard who can play with or without the ball in his hands, and he's a quick, active on-ball defender.     Another guard who showcased that he can play with or without the ball in his hands, Woerdehoff could've also found himself in the "Top Playmakers" article. He's a long, confident guard who is really good in ball screen actions, especially when he can read the defender dropping in his coverage and simply step behind the screen and splash 3s with a pure stroke. In addition to his work as a shooting threat, he can get downhill and finish at the rim with either hand, and he does a really nice job competing on the glass on both ends of the floor.
