Ohio Sophomore ID Camp: Team 1 Standouts

The Prep Hoops Ohio Sophomore ID Camp was loaded with talent from Ohio's 2029 class and in this article we'll take a look at the standouts from Team 1.    Houston mixed it up with taller and stronger players in the paint, showing his scrappiness to fight for loose balls and rebounds. The Cincinnati area guard mostly scored by attacking the rim either in transition, with step-through moves or off steals. With his combination of tough on-ball defense, impressive rebounding for his size and slashing ability, Houston was a productive player at the camp and impressed me throughout the day.     Looney was knocking down shots on the perimeter with time and space as he's a guy you can't leave open from long distance. The Dayton Christian wing guard made simple passes to his teammates and didn't force the issue. While Looney got some limited varsity action as a freshman, he looks like he's getting prepared to have a real role for Dayton Christian this winter and contributing at a showcase with top talent will certainly help him prepare for SWBL action.     The leading scorer at Miami Valley as a freshman, George has already made an impact at the varsity level. George looked to be around the action throughout the game and seemed to play with the experience that a player with lots of varsity experience would have. While George doesn't get to see the type of talent he saw on Saturday during the high school season, the numbers he put up made me sure to notice him and he made the most of his opportunity against players from big time high school programs. Small school prospect with a big time game!     A bigger framed wing forward, Carter has the frame and strength to push people around on both ends of the court. When looking at his size you might expect him to mostly work around the paint and I think the defense had that same assumption before Carter knocked down three 3-pointers to begin their first 5 on 5 contest of the day. As the day went on, Carter started working more in the paint and had a really nice up and under move to score. With his mix of strength, interior scoring and floor spacing, Carter should make a nice impact for Marysville in the OCC.     Leist caught my eye as a new name from central Ohio as the New Hope Christian Academy guard made shots, has a strong frame and had nice footwork in the paint. That combination made him stand out for his team and should allow Leist the opportunity to make a name for himself this winter with New Hope Christian Academy.     One of my favorite new names from the camp, Nelson immediately caught my eye with his aggressiveness, physicality, athleticism and interior scoring. It seemed like every time I turned over to his court, Nelson was scoring at the rim or making a play. Able to take it coast to coast, if Nelson got a defensive rebound he wouldn't stop unless the defense forced him to give it up and a couple times he went straight to the rim to score. Overall very impressive showing from Nelson as his athletic tools should make him an impact player in the OCC this winter.
