Freshman Showcase: Fresh Faces Making Their Mark

The Freshman Showcase at Supreme Courts in Aurora gave the 2030 class an opportunity to put themselves on the map with the regular season just a few months away. With a large turnout of prospects entering high school, there was plenty of competition from the young class looking to make an early impression. It was encouraging to see the talent and competitiveness on display from the young class, setting the stage for an exciting group to follow for seasons to come. This first edition will highlight a few players who initially caught my eye in the first matchup I saw them in.    defensive activity immediately caught my eye, getting into ball-handlers' pockets, creating tie-ups, including one that he ripped away, and turning steals into instant transition offense. Showed good timing on a few blocks and when contesting shots in the lane. Also flashed some offense with a deep ball, smooth crossovers, finger-roll finishes, and following up misses for second-chance opportunities. His poise, raw skillset, and defensive focus are key traits that will be fun to follow.     I think Mt. Carmel has a promising freshman in their hands. Farley was a gem to watch with a high motor and seemingly advanced skillset for his age. Showed the ability to control the ball and lead from the point, while also creating for others and being a scoring guard on numerous occasions. Played with a great pace and burst, showing confidence with the ball in his hands and the ability to create in different ways. His energy was noticeable throughout, impacting the game on both ends with his activity and athleticism. The combination of his skill, pace, and motor made him one of the players who immediately caught my eye.     Mckinnie was a standout with his high motor and activity all over the court. An intriguing South Side Chicago kid, his speed was noticeable in the open floor, creating opportunities to attack and get downhill, while showing the skill and footwork to finish through tight coverage. Liked his ability to use hesitation moves and change of direction to get by defenders, along with his defensive hustle and willingness to make things uncomfortable for opponents. As he continues to improve his control and tempo, his speed and motor could become even bigger strengths.     Young, captivating ball-handler out of Racine Case who is also in the 2031 class, yet competed comfortably against a grade above. His ball control and ability to handle pressure immediately stood out, showing quickness with the ball while finding ways to split defenders, get paint touches, and create for others. Liked his point guard play and the way he controlled the offense, while his ball skills remain a major strength and key attribute of his game. For a 2031 prospect competing up, Carbajal was an intriguing young player to keep an eye on.     A Northwest Side Chicago product, stood out with his strong build and physical approach to attacking the basket. Did most of his damage on straight-line drives, using his strength to shed defenders and get downhill with force. He played like a bulldozer at times, getting to the rack with ease and showing the ability to adjust in the air to finish around defenders. His physicality and ability to consistently put pressure on the rim made him an enticing first look.     Southwest suburbs kid who showed some smoothness with the ball and a willingness to attack. Liked his control and use of hesitation moves to find driving lanes, while showing the ability to stop, pivot, and create space around the rim. His passing feel also stood out, including a no-look pass that shifted defenders away from his target. Still has room to become more efficient as a finisher, but liked that he consistently looked to make plays and attack. Looked even smoother in the open floor, where his pace and ball control allowed him to create.
