2029 Shooting Guards To Know

The debut Prep Hoops Illinois 2029 rankings have been released. Here are a look at a half dozen shooting guards from the class of 2029 that made the list and a breakdown of their games.    Rush first caught our attention this summer at the Crossroads Midwest Showcase in Normal where the 6'3 SG from Collinsville consistently impacted the game with his energy and versatility. He was at his best when playing in transition turning defensive rebounds and well-timed anticipation of turnovers into quick offensive opportunities. In the half-court, Rush showed encouraging court vision and sound decision-making, making timely drive-and-kick reads while creating quality scoring chances for teammates. He also proved capable of generating offense for himself, knocking down shots from the mid-range and beyond the arc with confidence. Defensively Rush's long and lanky frame allowed him to pressure opposing guards, disrupt passing lanes, and consistently affect the flow of the offense. His combination of pace, activity level, playmaking, and two-way versatility makes him an impactful guard with the ability to influence the game in a variety of ways.     A flashy combination of size and athleticism, Olingou's skill and frame points to long-term upside. He projects as a textbook wing as he will only continue to grow and provide more mature skills. His ball handling and court vision are worthy assets that will grab attention. Olingous' ability to push the ball in transition and make the right reads provides consistent efficient scoring opportunities. In the ½ court setting he comes off ball screens with purpose and will move without the ball intentionally as well. His outside shooting game is a department to keep track of as he can get going in rhythm with a fundamental release. Defensively Olingou can present challenges because of his length and activity level to disrupt smaller opposing guards. The ceiling should continue to rise for the Lincoln Park product.     Grybash is a versatile guard whose skill set extends well beyond the traditional shooting guard role. While he projects naturally as a 2 man he has the feel and versatility to slide into a point guard or wing depending on his team's needs. A true three-level scorer, Grybash creates offense in a variety of ways utilizing a soft mid-range floater while confidently stretching the floor from beyond the arc. Grybash fearlessly attacks the rim through contact even when driving lanes appear limited. One of the more polished aspects of his game is his patience after the catch, consistently surveying the floor before making his move. He uses jab steps, pump fakes, and strong rip-through moves to keep defenders off balance before getting downhill at the proper angle. Combined with his fundamentally sound skill set, high basketball IQ, and ability to impact both ends of the floor, Grybash projects as a highly productive two-way guard for Palatine with the versatility to fit multiple roles.     Berg plays with a mature pace and feel that stands out for an incoming sophomore on an already established Pecatonica squad. Thriving in the Indians' up-tempo system, he fits seamlessly alongside a talented group by making smart decisions and consistently playing within the flow of the offense. His shooting ability from beyond the arc is one of his biggest strengths as he projects as a reliable perimeter threat who can stretch the floor. Berg also does a good job of getting into the paint off the dribble, keeping his eyes up to create opportunities for teammates while remaining under control. He rarely gets sped up, understands spacing, and consistently finds the right spots within the offense. Coupled with his disciplined approach on both ends of the floor and fundamentally sound play, Berg projects as an efficient, dependable contributor and a prospect worth following closely throughout his high school career.     McDonald earns a spot inside our initial Prep Hoops Class of 2029 Top 100 rankings after consistently impressing throughout the spring and summer. The 6'2 Fremd shooting guard projects primarily as a true two but has the versatility to slide to the 3 wing when needed as well. His greatest strength is his ability to score from the perimeter, owning a confident, quick release that allows him to get shots off with little space. McDonald does an excellent job utilizing ball screens, relocating off-ball, and coming off flare actions, making defenses pay whenever he is left open on catch-and-shoot opportunities. He spaces the floor well and possesses legitimate range that extends several feet beyond the three-point line. While his perimeter shooting is his calling card he also flashes the ability to put the ball on the floor and attack closeouts which adds another dimension to his offensive game. A dangerous shot-maker capable of heating up in a hurry, McDonald has established himself as one of the premier pure shooters in the Class of 2029.     Wienen earns a spot inside the top 50 of our initial Prep Hoops Class of 2029 rankings after putting together an impressive spring and summer on the AAU circuit. The hard-nosed combo guard from Galena immediately stands out with his relentless competitiveness and unwavering motor, playing every possession with toughness and purpose regardless of the situation. His natural instincts and anticipation allow him to impact the game on both ends of the floor while his continually developing skill set suggests there is still plenty of room for growth. Fittingly Wienen's AAU program he plays for is named Team Compete and that mentality perfectly reflects the style of play he brings on the floor. This past scholastic season, his JV team finished a perfect 30-0 while he earned valuable varsity minutes as a true freshman. One of the few small-school prospects to crack our initial rankings, he possesses the competitiveness, work ethic, and long-term upside to develop into a legitimate scholarship-level player when it's all said and done.
