We got out to the Metro State Camp this weekend, the first Team Camp of the summer, and saw some new names who emerged at the event. The Platinum Division had plenty of established names, but it also brought a handful of players who forced their way onto the radar through their play. These are guys who look poised for much larger roles this upcoming season, and after spending the weekend watching them compete, it's easy to see why their coaches are going to trust them with more responsibility.

Gabler was one of the bigger surprises of the weekend for Ralston Valley because he consistently showed up in the little areas that matter. Despite often giving up size, he battled relentlessly on the glass, competed through contact, kept plays alive, and was the defensive anchor for Ralston all weekend. Gabler was able to come up with steals; he got out in transition and made smart reads as well. He didn't force too many plays; he did a ton of things that don't necessarily show up in the box score but lead to winning. Ralston Valley is going to ask a lot from him this year, and based on what I saw, he looks ready for that challenge.

Rillos looked like a player who is on the verge of a breakout year, and although he's appearing in the new names to know article, he had plenty of moments that could've led him to being one of the MVPs of the camp. He has solid size, strength, and athleticism, and he was explosive. He got to wherever he wanted on the floo,r which made his difficult for defenders to handle all weekend. He lived at the FT line, had a couple of big 20+ point performances, and controlled the game offensively. I fully expect him to be a breakout name this year as his athleticism is one of the tops in the state and he will be asked to do a ton. I fully expect him to step up.

Goldberg stood out at Metro State Camp because of how steady he was with the ball in his hands. While other guards were forcing plays and trying to withstand so much pressure, he was a prospect who consistently made the right read and kept the offense organized and in play. He broke defenders down off the dribble, finished through contact, and played with a toughness that showed up throughout the event. What I appreciated most was his decision-making. He understood when to create for others and when to look for his own offense, and had moments where he attacked and got a few baskets. It was a strong showing from a guard who looks prepared for increased responsibility, and Kent Denver will need him to be solid if they want to compete. Big year upcoming for him.

Roehlette was a player I knew very little about entering camp, but that changed quickly in the two games I watched of him. He does plenty of things for Northfield. He handled pressure well, knocked down perimeter shots, and brought an edge every time out where I had to ask who he want. He also had moments as a playmaker who looked for his own offense but got teammates open with some passes, dribble drives, and kickouts. Eli was never sped up; he responded even when things got physical, and he looks like he could take on an even larger ball-handling responsibility. He's definitely a name I'll be tracking closely.

Hanson may have been one of the best new discoveries of the weekend. Grandview needed someone to create offense, handle pressure, and set a tone, and he answered that call repeatedly. He got downhill aggressively, finished above traffic, and was sneaky athletic as he rose for a few dunks in traffic. On the defensive end of the floor, he was also intriguing as he used his length to speed a few guards up. Grandview put him at the top of the break to use his size, and he got his hands on loose balls, he got steals, and went up for easy finishes. The tools are obvious, but what really stood out was how much was being asked of him. He looks like a player who is going to take on a major role this year.
