DMV Live S1: Friday’s Awards

DMV Live tipped off yesterday at noon on the campuses of DeMatha Catholic and Elizabeth Seton. College coaches made their way to the DMV to take in some of the top talent on the East Coast.   Below are a handful of awards from day one's action.   MVP: [player_tooltip player_id='2454534' first='Terence' last='Jones III'] | 2027 | St. Frances   If there was any player to will their team to a win on Friday it was Jones. St. Frances defeated a tough Highland team and it was because of Jones ability to dictate tempo on both ends of the floor. His three-level scoring ability was on full display as his 26 points came on just 12 field goal attempts. He canned 4-of-7 from three and consistently got into the paint where he collapsed the defense and dazzled with floaters or lasers passes to shooters around the perimeter. He's a plus rebounder and that's where his competitive edge comes to light considering his size at 6-foot. He collected six boards and dished out five assists in the effort.   Best floor game:   [player_tooltip player_id='2139297' first='J'Lon' last='Lyons'] | 2027 | Clinton Grace   Simply put, Lyons' game is on another level right now. Fresh off a plane from his standout week at NBPA Top 100, Lyons put on another excellent performance despite coming up short against McNamara on the scoreboard. His dynamism on the ball has always been a strength, but it's the patience and the calculated aggression that is now forcing the attention of blue blood programs. He posted 23 points, eight assists and five rebounds.   Best rebouder:   [player_tooltip player_id='2629848' first='Kyle' last='Logan'] | 2027 | Riverdale Baptist   Logan was a stock-riser on day one as Riverdale dominated Bishop Ireton in their only game on Friday. Logan wasn't only the leading rebounded for his team, but for the event thus far as he collected 13 in total. A valuable wing prospect at 6'5" with a nice frame, Logan's activity in box score categories other than scoring has been the most pleasant development this spring. He still piled up an impressive 22 points in the win, but his ability close down possessions snagging rebounds at their peak and limiting the opposition to one-shot trips has more impact than a stat sheet would offer.   Best shooter:   Connor Culley | 2028 | Bishop O'Connell   Culley is a name that burst onto my radar this spring with his play with DC Assault 16s. His ability to ring in three's in a hurry can change the course of a game within a few possessions. Culley showed that yesterday, especially in their matchup against Andrews Osbourne where he went for 22 points on 6-of-11 from beyond the arc. He poses good size for his projected role long-term at 6'5" and has a high understanding of how and when to move without the ball.   Best breakout performance:   Matt McKenzie | 2027 | Takoma Academy   Unless you follow the high school scene in the DMV very closely, McKenzie may not what you consider to be a 'household name,' but the kid has serious game. A 6'1" southpaw combo guard who is wired to get buckets in bunches off the bounce from the mid-range where he attacks with fluid pace and balance. While he's at his best attacking closeouts to get into the 15-to-17 foot range make no mistake about it, he can let it fly from three off the catch and must be accounted for on the catch. McKenzie put up 38 in a loss to a surging Bethel Academy program, going 11-of-22 from the field and 5-of-11 from three. He'll be a name that Division II programs want to track closely.
