One of the biggest risers in this update was Phillips and it was due to the way he took advantage of the increased opportunity on a McNamara team that went through a bevy of injuries. As Phillips' minutes increased, his role blossomed into a consistent starter who touched many categories on the box score. His scoring opportunities come within the flow of the offense, making himself available in the right spots at the right time or putting his head down and sprinting the lanes in transition. As the season progressed, we began to see his value off the bounce as a downhill threat where he could finish the job through contact or make the right read as a passer processing rotations. Defensively he was a versatile piece that could switch 1-4 and make things easier from a schematic perspective for his coaching staff. One of the better connectors to emerge in the DMV this season.

Another prospect that fits that 'connector' label is Woodard. The 6-foot-4 southpaw guard/wing made presence known as he helped in big efforts down the stretch for a Springdale Prep team that would claim the Maryland Private School State title. He's a high-energy guard that brings intensity no matter if he's in the starting lineup or coming off the bench. Towards the end of the season, head coach Tyrone Johnson used him as the spark plug in a sixth man role and it seemed like he embraced the duty every time he entered the game for the first time. He picks his man up full court and moves well laterally while using his plus length to close passing windows when guarding the ball or cause deflections in the passing lanes off of it. He's a rebounding presence, can effectively guard 1-3 positions and doesn't hesitate to give up his body for a hustle play.

If you've been following our coverage here this season, little surprise that Word received a bump after a productive sophomore campaign. He was pushed into the starting point guard role and adjusted nicely as a primary ball handler expected to initiate half court sets, but also present as a cold-blooded shot maker in crunch time of games. The All-BCL Second Team member brings a competitive motor and the knack for making big plays in big moments. On a few occasions this season, his streaky shooting, wiggle off the bounce and willingness to get his nose in scuffles would ultimately help lift the Gaels to pivotal wins. He moves from No. 29 to No. 22 heading into the spring/summer with [program_tooltip program_id='2076999' first='Team' last='Melo'] 16s.

A massive riser, the No. 41 slot could be just the start for Wylie, who emerged late in the year as a 6-foot-7 southpaw forward with endless potential. Not only is his game still growing, I wouldn't be shocked if Wylie grows 2-to-3 more inches before his high school career is done. Even for now, he presents as a mismatch with his ability to score inside or out. In the Maryland Private School State Tournament, he helped lift New Hope to the semifinals with a game-winning triple at the top of the key and converted on his total shots from beyond the arc at a 55 percent clip throughout the two games. His versatility at both ends will make him a hot commodity this spring/summer, which will give him even more of a chance to improve on an already meteoric rise from No. 137 to No. 41.

Hurd has largely remained under the radar but that won't last too much longer and we're getting ahead of the curve by slotting him in our top-50 at No. 48. He, like Wylie, is one of those prospects who will have a great chance of rising further as the 6-foot-5 hybrid forward was super productive for Long Reach in Howard County this winter. He's just scratching the surface of the finished product he will become, but Hurd was a constant double-double threat anytime he took the floor this season. He has athleticism to play above the rim at both ends, good hands and can surprise you with some dribble creation in quick isolations where he attacks the rim. He had to rebound at a high rate for his team this season with their lack of size, which helped develop an edge for ripping them down at their peak. He'll be one to watch closely over the next 4-to-5 months.
