How it happened: A rebound and fast-break layup gave Highland an early 4-2 lead. Both teams played tenacious defense in the opening minutes. [player_tooltip player_id='2146038' first='Clay' last='Kincaid']'s offensive rebound basket and a layup by Artesia gave the Bulldogs the lead. Artesia had pulled within 39-23 when timeout was called with 6:18 left, 3Q. Artesia continued to surge following the timeout with two more baskets before Highland halted the run. The Hornets put together their own 4-0 run to go ahead 43-27. Kincaid, though, ended the brief run with an emphatic dunk in front of the cheering Artesia fans. With the lead down to 12, Nico Sanchez made two free throws for Highland. An Artesia transition basket off a Highland turnover forced the Hornets to call timeout with 2:24 left in the 3Q. Coming out of the timeout, Artesia again scored a layup off a Highland turnover to make it 45-35. Fede Nunez buried a 3-pointer from the wing to stop the run and give Highland a 50-37 lead. Artesia pulled within single digits by the end of the 3rd quarter. Artesia outscored Highland, 22-14, in the third quarter, scoring numerous baskets on layups in transition.

When Artesia opened the scoring in the 4th quarter with a pair of fast break layups plus a free throw, Highland's lead had suddenly dropped to 4 at 50-46.

Standout Performers

Fede Nunez, Highland: Led a balanced Highland scoring attack with 17 points, three 3-pointers and 4 rebounds. Unlikely hero [player_tooltip player_id='2553912' first='Treavon' last='Carter'] scored 7 points and had two huge 3-pointers in the contest.

Nico Sanchez, Highland: Scored 16 points and went 7-for-8 from the FT line to help propel the Hornets offense. The extremely quick Sanchez is excellent driving to the basket. [player_tooltip player_id='2693635' first='Juan' last='Limas'] had 14 points and 7 rebounds before fouling out.

[player_tooltip player_id='2146038' first='Clay' last='Kincaid'], Artesia: Scored 18 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, barely missing a double-double, to lead Artesia.

Key Stats: Two keys to the win for Highland were the Hornets' 3-point shooting (10-of-22)compared to Artesia (2-12) and free throw shooting. Highland made 15-of-18 free throws while Artesia struggled from the FT line, making just 6-of-20 charity tosses. Those numbers offset Artesia's advantage in rebounding (40-33), points in the paint (46-22) and pints off turnovers (22-13).

Standout Performers:

[player_tooltip player_id='2833891' first='Jordan' last='Holland'], Fort Sumner/House: If they named a Class 1A State Tournament MVP, Holland would be the choice. He scored 31 points, drained 4 3-pointers, grabbed 5 rebounds, dished out 5 assists and drew 9 fouls while playing all 32 minutes in Saturday's title game.

[player_tooltip player_id='2833898' first='Tra'von' last='Bonds'], Fort Sumner/House: Bonds was the perfect Ed McMahon to Holland's Johnny Carson on Saturday. Bonds scored 21 points and hit three key 3-pointers. He also grabbed 6 rebounds, four offensive. He played all but 28 seconds of the game.

[player_tooltip player_id='1717329' first='Mason' last='Wallin']/[player_tooltip player_id='1717249' first='Hayden' last='Bruhn'], Logan: The Longhorns' dynamic duo have been exceptional throughout their careers and Saturday was no different. They combined for 33 points, 25 rebounds (12 offensive) and shot 14-of-26 from the field. Logan will look a lot different next season without this duo. Wallin has signed with New Mexico Highlands to play football.
